  1. I believe this to be one of few uses of drone mounted firearms that actually works and makes sense.

The Mavics are not toys. The recently released statistics show that when casualties are broken down by cause, 75% were by drones. I don’t know the break down between FPV drone, Mavic drop, heavy lifter drop, or high tech winged drone (Switchblade 300 etc), but guessing wildly, I’d say that the grenade drops kill or injure the most, so maybe 50% of total casualties.

To the receiving end, that makes the Mavic a serious threat, one that is worth spending significant resources combating:

    * Clearly EW protection is insufficient because we see dozens of successful drop each day.
    * The debate over whether to issue shotguns more widely continues, but the reality is that Mavics are difficult to hit by shotgun because they are high enough that small buckshot is needed, and they don’t have the dense pattern required. A purposebuilt shotgun with a specific load used by a trained soldier can be effective, but that drains a lot of manpower.
    * Detection systems exist, but can be much simpler to operate and more effective.
    * A smart scope and accurized sharpshooting rifle might be effective at. Or even a smarscoped equipped full auto 0.22 with high capacity mag. Regardless of which, it is an extra weapon to carry, and personnel to train in using it. And from videos, the drones are often not seen until too late, so without warning sensors, won’t be that helpful.

The reality is that personnel will be exposed, and the best protection is other drones keeping the Mavics at bay. But those drones need a mechanism to bring them down. We have seen the net launcher. Even comes with multi launch capability. And then this shotgun, which clearly gets the job done.

But it is still heavy, and cumbersome, so not the ultimate solution. I am guessing that there are many millions of dollars being spent as we speak coming up with high tech solutions. I don’t know what they will come up with, but I am going to guess that it will be a purposebuilt anti-Mavic drone. Mavics are fragile, so I believe ramming will be the most straightforward method. I can see very fast, compact and hardened drones. Maybe it will have a formfactor similr to the record breaking quads, a chubby rocket with props. Expend some weight on a strong aluminum or composite outer shell. Then it is just a matter of running into the Mavics at high speed. Sooner or later, the life expectancy of a Mavic that comes within a mile of the front will be seconds. Will obviously work with a separate detection system, and also quality thermal imager on the drone. They will need to work out some type of blue force tracker for drones so that friendly drones aren’t destroyed by accident.

  2. Take an autoloading shotgun and use birdshot with a lighter gunpowder load and set the shotgun action to reload with the lighter recoil. I bet it would still take out Mavics and you’d have say ten shots per flight with no need for a counterweight shot. I bet they are working on that right now.

  3. Drone vs drone combat with a shotgun. Just reminds me of that South Park episode from around 10 years ago where the drones became a menace so they had police drones go after the lawless drones.

It’s crazy how heavy miniature drone usage has become for modern warfare. Most countries are not even close to ready to handle such a situation without heavy regular drills and equipment specifically for it.

  4. “Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up! You see this? This… is my BOOMSTICK! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington.”

Is what I imagine a drone operator might say.

  5. A flying double barrel? This is a dream come to fruition! So many applications, right?
Hope this is working for Ukraine.
