I know there’s an issue with land and location but at 250k per house (ish) that would build an insane number of houses that the government could then receive rent from
Government helping to inflate housing market by giving tax payers money to private individuals and institutions .
Would be nice not to have to pay rent on the otherhand
*The shift from directly building social homes to providing rent subsidies – the so-called bricks to benefits switch – has been one of the most significant recent trends in housing here and in other countries. The average monthly rent subsidy in 2019 was €1,872*
These numbers are phenomonal; local authorities are paying out huge sums a month to private landlords and at the end of a tenancy are left with no tangible assets.
This is and always was the ultimate goal of fg. Its the idealogy.
Milk the taxpayer under the guise of the free market.
Had the state actually kept building its housing stock not only would it provide housibg but also be a source of revenue and an asset forever more.
This is nothing more then a subsidy to the wealthy class who can afford to buy multiple houses.
Whats worse is they are now doubling down on this policy. Allowing developers to build on public land and then leasing it all back to the gov at market rates and we still dont even the property theyve built.
Its robbery.
The apologists will be along soon to try and rationalise this utter waste.
Waste of money
Who in god’s name is getting a subsidy above €2k. That’s not a subsidy, that’s someone’s rent being paid.
An absolute waste of money, who is getting subsidised rent to the tune of 2k a month and what are they paying towards it? Where is mine for paying that tax that funds those people by working full time and paying 1250 rent out of my own pocket???
Agree with the general sentiment that we need more public owned housing, but also its nice that so many people are being helped out.
100,000 people accommodated for €600m. Many of whom will be supporting more people than just themselves – kids, etc.
To build standalone accommodation for 100,000 households, at about €400,000 a pop, would be €40bn.
We may need to go in that direction, but it’s not straightforwardly simple.
I’ve spent €85k in rent in 7 years. I made the mistake of standing on my own 2 feet.
I know of a guy who after getting out of prison for attacking his girlfriend was given a 3 bed A2 rated house in wexford Town. The system is fucked.
But like that houz waznt gud cuz me Ma lives da oder saed taun an I cudnt put da trampleen 4 da kizz da bak an their wazunt a bos stopp neer an da of lizense waz mailez avey.
It makes me to sick to think this is just a direct funnel from the public wallet into landlord bank accounts. To think how much that money could be used to actually build social housing for the future and try to address the structural problems rather than pointing a money hose into oblivion.
That 900m could have built alot of infrastructure.. but hey according to the government sky high rents aren’t a problem.. go figure…
Ask who the biggest landlords in Ireland are…..
This is essentially money direct to them.
There has to be other ways of doing this using limits rather than handing over tax money
There you have it folks, why bother working when you can just play the game and get a social house, the medical card and the dole every week.
We’re being run by a bunch of banks and technocrats. You might as well just let Goldman Sachs run the country at this rate.
