I have made that wrong turn and ended up having to cross the border when I didn’t want to because of the ramps to the bridge. I told the border agent it was a mistake and she let me through to turn around.
But to think that this can lead to being ‘disappeared’ for multiple days or weeks by Customs and Border Protection is terrifying.
Sucks to be an American who relies on the tourism or hospitality trade. Good luck surving the next 4 years.
Why would anyone willingly visit the USA in the current context when there are dozens of other third world countries to visit?

The Rainbow Bridge where this happened, used to be pretty busy. It used to be a place where; until G. W. Bush decided that Canadians should have passports/NEXUS card to cross; parents and kids used to cross within 3 questions/15 seconds. No identification. Whether by car, or on foot. It’s located right at Niagara Falls.
Hopefully I can see my mom again someday (an American living in Canada). Just this entire situation is depressing when I think I won’t see her for at least 4 more years (it has already been 2, due to immigration stuff and school).
To all non us humans: don’t come here. To all us citizens: get out of you can.
A lot of schools in Canada that planned schools trips to the USA are cancelling the trips;
not just out of protest, but also because of the risks of having individual kids be stuck at the border even if they have all required paperworks.
That’s what fascists do, no surprise here.
I remember in 1980s, you could drive into Quebec by just showing your drivers license. Easy peasey. So many last minute trips to Montreal to see some band play.
The people crossing can separate themselves from the events going on enough to visit or take a vacation…why aren’t the border people..is it because they work for the government and it’s the life…
