Spain’s Univergy Solar has received environmental approval for its proposed 200MW La Orquídea solar complex in Colombia as the Andean country ratchets up efforts to expand renewable energy capacity.

The project will have an expected lifespan of 30 years and includes an elevated substation component, environmental regulator ANLA said in a statement.

Earmarked for the municipalities of Clemencia and Santa Catalina in northern Bolívar department, the project will require investment of 616bn pesos (US$154mn), according to separate permitting documents seen by BNamericas.

According to Colombian grid operator and wholesale power market coordinator XM, the country’s installed power capacity stands at 20,859MW. The figure includes 13,222MW of hydropower, 6,289MW of thermal power and 1,348MW of solar energy.

There are currently no commercial-scale wind projects in operation.

The Gustavo Petro administration has set a target of 6,000MW of non-conventional renewable energy capacity by August 2026.

In related news, ISA presented an environmental impact study for its Colombia-Panama interconnection project.

The cross-border power link is expected to require total investment of US$800mn, comprising US$350mn from Colombia and US$450mn from Panama.
