Note: This data is based on an October 2022 report from the GAO: WORKING DOGS Federal Agencies Need to Better Address Health and Welfare. The agency was motivated to conduct a study on federal working dog programs after identifying past concerns with the government’s animal management. We published a piece based on this report that you can read [here](https://usafacts.org/articles/dogs-with-jobs-data-on-canine-employment-in-the-government/) if you’re interested.

  2. Interesting, but also a tiny, tiny proportion of dogs employed by govt. State and local government agencies would have many tens of thousands.

PS: I met a super cute little terrier the other day whose job is to sniff out rats and mice on bird sanctuary islands.

    Edit: here she is! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgkuNLWT5x4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgkuNLWT5x4)

  3. As somebody who owns a rough collie (a Lassie), can confirm: would be useless to the military.

  4. If I had to rank all the US government employees, the 5,000 dogs would be S-tier, all teachers A tier, everyone else is F-tier

  5. Weird, I’ve met a large portion of the Ag dogs. Didn’t realize it was that small a number in total.

  6. I see the comment about being able to adopt dogs who have failed out of the training programs. I’ve also read that dogs who retire from service are most often adopted by their handlers with whom they’ve typically formed a close bond. But for a variety of reasons this isn’t always possible either and there are a few organizations that work to find homes for these dogs including Mission K-9 and the retired police canine foundation.

  7. Foreign dog breeds, do they even have citizenship? How can the U.S. administration allow this?

  8. Who’s that ONE state managed dog in homeland security lol
