A U.S. invasion of Greenland could actually happen: I was once skeptical of Trump’s chatter about seizing Greenland — I’m not anymore.

  1. What is there to say about this betrayal, thank past US presidents for convincing European Nato members that they do not need their own nukes.

  2. European countries should send military detachments to Greenland to join their military. That way any military action towards Greenland becomes more risky because the European troops would also be on the front lines.

  3. Time for EU nations to get nukes. It’s expensive, yes. It’s dangerous, yes. But you either get a nuke, or you get nuked.

  4. Every EU nation, plus the UK, Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland should be sending troops there right now.

  5. What Vance said on his visit basically was that Denmark has been treating Greenland poorly and that somehow America will save it from that.

That’s a Putinesque overture. That is to paint Greenland as disfunctional and in such a dire situation that the “rescue limited operation” may be conducted from (the last remaining) US base to “save” the rest of population.

The other way they may try was a practice of simply purchasing land and then meddling into Greenland politics – the way they acquired Hawaii.

  6. Trade wars everybody accepts, but invading an ally would completely isolate the US.

  7. Just a question? What could Europe realistically do if the US would annex Greenland? Would there be any military consequences? Would the EU risk a war with the most powerful military in the world and a nuclear power? I mean they might kick american military out of Europe and would probably impose sanctions, but how I see it there’s nothing Europe could do besides saying they’re really really pissed.

  8. I think such a provocative move, should shake the mainstream Repubs who have cowered in fear of Trump/Musk into action.

This action would have very consequential results at the ballot box, as the US would need to create the means to maintain the region by land sea and air and I can not see the “good” thinks hegseth is doing to increase military readiness or manpower levels.

  9. Greenland would need to request Danish troops to set up a base there. Unless they are willing to admit that separatism has made them a tasty target and run back to Denmark then we all just have to watch them get swallowed up.

No EU country should put troops on Greenland without their invitation. We are not land grabbers.

The people of Greenland appear to be to have been unlucky to live through the end period of a special time in world history when it appeared for a few decades like a territory that large and that mineral rich with 55000 inhabitants could breakaway and be independent. Now it looks hopelessly naive. But I don’t blame them. But they have to choose a side soon. Independence is impossible.

  10. First off, why? It would alienate all us allies. It’s not about security because they already have options for more bases. The economic fallout would almost certainly outweigh the economic benefits of mining. 90% of the country is against it.

  11. Lol, I wonder what they’ll do when they get it and find out it’s pretty much unlivable for most and actually a big money pit.

  12. Any chance they’d take it and then give it back once a Democratic president wins an election again?

  13. The EU should immediately announce a memorandum of understanding to control and extract all of Greenland’s resources.

Trump is trolling the Danes, acting as bullies do. You stop this by escalating. Adding multiple nations to this turns Greenland into more of a porcupine.

While you’re at it, stop buying American weapons and start building attack drones by the millions. The latter is the cheapest way to create a defense force quickly.

In addition, start stocking up artillery, surface to air missiles and ammunition. This is simpler than buying aircraft, which are proving in the Ukraine war to be of limited value. Air superiority does not appear to be the key to victory today as it once was, as costly support aircraft can be destroyed with cheap weaponry.

  14. Good hedge against this plan: spend 300,000 euro towards high quality public opinion polling in West & East Coast states.

Question for subjects: “Would you support a secession from the USA to form a new federation that does respect checks and balances, rule of law, and the Constitution?”

Just start talking about secession. Trump seems to talk about the wildest things. Instead of sitting back and witnessing history, start making it by creating headlines that show people don’t want tyranny. Not in Greenland, not in Canada, not in California or in Massachusetts.

  15. They could have had as many NATO bases and mines in Greenland as they wanted. Another screw up.

  16. WE ARE MOMENTS AWAY FROM THEM DOING THIS ALREADY COME ON.

God i am so fucking sick of people not taking things seriously.

2025 is basically 1938 and Greenland is Czechoslovakia l.

  17. What is don’t understand is that the current agreement between Denmark and the US already allows for more military bases for strategic security. The US doesn’t need Greenland for that. I suspect it wants Greenland for its natural resources.

  18. > A U.S. invasion of Greenland could actually happen: I was once skeptical of Trump’s chatter about seizing Greenland — I’m not anymore.

“How I became a collaborator” would have been a better title than this.

  19. Greenland is HUGE. 10,000 Marines Would be a dot in that frozen wilderness. What difference would that make to anybody until Trump is dead? Unless they start harassing and arresting the Greenlanders for objecting.

  20. Trump is certainly insane enough to do it, but the fallout, political and economic, would be very bad for all concerned, but mostly for the US. It would end diplomatic and trade relations with almost all of Europe and a lot of other countries as well. It would push Canada into an extreme military buildup to counter the US doing it to them, and I think Australia won’t be happy either, not to mention Japan and South Korea. Mexico and south America would not be ecstatic either. I don’t see any country from Europe, apart from maybe a token Danish force to be able to say “well, we tried”, to put any troops there.

P.S. The UK and all the other F-35 users might need to look at other options.

  21. Trump wants free minerals (without having to pay subsidies or taxes to any state). What he wants in Greenland is exactly what he wants in Ukraine: a free meal. A gigantic, forever free meal.

He doesn’t care about the local population. He doesn’t care about their freedom or well-being. He cares about his bottom line.

For him, Denmark with Greenland is like a baby holding a lollipop. He can just grab the lollipop and run with it, because he is strong and there’s no risk of getting punched on the nose.

  22. Ok, let’s play out this scenario:

US actually does it and wins.

US gets dropped from NATO. US gets sanctioned by the EU. US gets tried and convicted in the ICC (but US isn’t a part of it so it’s ok). US becomes untrustworthy and a social pariah from most of the free world and destroys any belief there ever was that it was protecting “democracy” and “freedom”. In light of this, other states including Canada, Mexico, and Panama decide the only way to defend their sovereignty is with active deterrence and leave the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

So yah, good luck with that.

  23. I don’t quite get it. Maybe someone can explain. Greenland and Denmark are in NATO correct? Wouldn’t all of us in NATO be obliged to defend Greenland if the U.S. invaded?

  24. Usa would lose all credibility and end up with zero allies If they pull a military action on Greenland…

So I expect them to do jt under the orange man.

  25. I just want to *believe* that the higher ranks of the US military are smart enough to see the disaster that would happen to the entire Western hegemony if they started such a thing.

At some point you must draw a line to what you allow your new monarch to do. There is no benefit to anyone but Trump’s absurd dream of conquering some land for the sake of it. There are already US troops in Greenland to begin with, anyone involved in the military should understand that’s a pointless thing to do.

And, I am sorry for being so blunt, it’s understandable how they are ready to throw under the bus LGBTQ+ people and minorities, but fucking their own power and wealth in order to follow the will of a senile con-man? Why would they do it?

  26. But what would Europe do about it? Really? The USA would then be the same as Russia..

  27. It’s so stupid because Americans can put as many troops and bases that they want in Greenland right now according to a treaty signed in 1951.
