***The Telegraph reports:***
The US Senate has passed legislation that would terminate new tariffs on Canada in a rare rebuke of Donald Trump, hours after the president unveiled a raft of reciprocal tariffs on other countries.
The [Republican-controlled Senate](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/politics/2024/11/06/four-things-trump-could-do-control-congress/) voted 51-48 to approve the Bill and sent it to the House of Representatives, where it is likely to be blocked.
Although it is likely to have no material impact on [Mr Trump’s tariffs](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2025/04/02/what-trumps-tariff-bombshell-means-for-uk-china-eu/), the fact that four Republican senators sided with Democrats to push the legislation through represents a blow to the [US president’s authority](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/03/29/trump-is-the-first-eurosceptic-us-president-and-thats-a-goo/).
The Democrat-sponsored Bill would terminate a national emergency declared by Mr Trump in January over [fentanyl crossing the US border](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/news/2025/03/16/more-eggs-seized-border-drugs-fentanyl-mexico-canada/) from Mexico and Canada, as well as China.
He imposed tariffs on those countries as punishment for failing to stop the flow of the deadly drug into the US.

GOP Senators trying to save their jobs because they know once the effects of the tariffs hit the Republican party will wait decades before it can have power in the legislative again.
That is if Trump decides the US will still have elections.
Well, at least the Pope will be pleased. I’m pretty sure the legendary lost spine of the GOP finally making a reapparance qualifies as some sort of divine miracle.
