  1. Why say few word when lot word do trick?

Man the guy manages to use 1000 words to say next to nothing. He essentially said “My priority is Britain, and we’re thinking about what to do”. No measures announced, no specific talking points to draw from it, just we’re considering what to do and not overreacting.

  2. Here’s my suggestion.

You know their embassy building in Nine Elms Lane? Evict then. They can be relocated to Walthamstowe or something.

I’m sure we can find a better use for that building than wasting it on them.

  3. Absolutely nothing of value was said in that speech.

    Just empty platitudes.

  4. Would love it if he took Trumps action as an excuse to rejoin the EU. Like ffs grow a back bone and get us back on track.

  5. I actually thought it was a good well measured response. Christ what do you people expect it’s just a press release?

  6. Starmer should be able to tell us exactly what he is going to do next, it’s just he hasn’t got a clue because he can’t bring himself to highlight how stupid this all is and what a fucking idiot Trump is. We need Canada-esque responses, not this “we all know America has gone mad but we’re too shit scared to say it out loud” cowardly bollocks.

  7. He said a lot but it doesn’t seem like he’s actually going to do anything.

  8. One thing that’s definately off my table is that shitty swimmig pool chicken the US wants to sell to us.

  9. Nothing much was said. Considering Trump has been talking about tariffs at least since November, you think we would have more concrete plans.

  10. Spineless tosser. His so called “Labour” government is such a disappointment. Same shit, different accents.

  11. Man, you lot all saying he’s doing nothing. I can imagine you all cheering him on if he announced financial retaliation, despite it directly fucking us over. That’s what Trump is doing, fucking his people over. His tarrifs will ultimately harm American people. But the rest of the world can mitigate it by not behaving like him.

It’s time to let the adults take over. Trump is a loose cannon and he’s going to cause real harm to millions of people.

What did you expect? Starmer to react immediately without consulting any one?

  12. “Today I will act in Britains interest”

First time for everything Kier you sausage

  13. Sir Kier McMillan PM in full effect, “peace in our time is my priority”.

  14. Hope he grows a pair and hits back. EU, Canada, and Australia have all had stern words on this (and will likely be following up with action). Starmer pussyfooting around, hoping not to upset Trump. Everyone needed to be united and respond in kind against Trump’s actions. I say this as a Labour voter.

  15. British politics in modern times. Ask ChatGPT to create a meaningless speech and read it out.

  16. This cunt has never been interested in putting money in the pockets of working people

  17. I’m sure any economist, historian or economic historian could cite myriad examples of victors in trade wars. Wonder if opium or tea ring any bells Keith?

  18. UK getting less tariffs than the rest of the world… exports likely going to go up. UK fascist gov just can’t be seen to be agreeing with trump, even though stammer is likely thanking him behind closed doors

  19. Personally I don’t give a shit what politicians say. It what actions they take that I’m interested in.

  20. Red tie and blue policy. Can we just overthrow the political class and put someone competant with our national interests at heart please? For once I’d like to have a British state that actually values the country rather than looking down their noses at us with utter disdain.

  21. Basically he means we’re doing fuck all in retaliation which is good because it’ll only cause problems getting into a trade war between the US and EU.

Ironically we’ll probably see a ramp up in trade between the EU and China thanks to these tarriffs

  22. Sounds like he’s selling us out to the US with a trade deal

  23. Anyone arguing these tariffs are unfair needs to ask themselves why we see Tetley’s tea, Yorkshire Tea, Nescafé and Douwe Egberts branded beverages and not Kenyan and Sri Lankan, Chinese and Ethiopian branded teas and coffees, it’s because the tariffs on raw goods is low while tariffs on the more profitable finished products are prohibitive. This gives the likes of Yorkshire tea a nice big slice of the pie.

Trump is obviously a massive cunt but he isn’t doing anything the west doesn’t do to the poorest countries in the world already. Now down that cup of colonialism and I’ll make you another.

  24. Starmer waffles in order to hide the fact that he won’t do anything. Rumour has it, a shiver is still seeking a spine to run down, on the Front Bench.

  25. No one wins a trade war, well if you don’t do anything considering the 10% base tariff, The Steel and car tariffs then the person who has initiated these has won.

  26. All we keep hearing is that all options are on the table and he’s done nothing and I don’t think he will.

  27. The best move the UK can make right now is seek to boost trade with the other countries impacted by the introduction of tariffs rather than compete with the US.

The US are ultimately going to fuck themselves over with this so no need to race to the bottom

  28. Trade wars win nothing – So why did we have a trade war with Europe?

  29. For everyone claiming he said nothing, it was pretty clear to me he’s laying the ground work for a big decision as a response.

Lots of “whatever it takes” and “nothing off the table” rhetoric is front and centre for a reason.

  30. Trump changes like the wind, I believe staying calm and leaving it a while may work but nobody knows.

  31. A lot of Brits in this thread seem to think nothing is said in this speech, but as an outsider I quite clearly hear a message here: “We will not be joining stronger retaliations for the sake of unity with Europe, and will place UK interests first”. That makes a lot of sense of course, but it is not what EU-members selfishly would like to hear.

He also seems to say that he will take a measured response in the hope that Trumps main anger will be directed elsewhere. Overall, it seems like a clear indication of direction. I’d be glad to hear if I am misunderstanding this, though.
