Students eye legal action over alarming data breach

Students at the Hellenic Open University are weighing legal action after a cyberattack last October leaked personal data onto the dark web.

The breach was attributed to the group RansomHub, which claims it extracted 813 GB of information – though only 65 GB was recovered by university technicians. Officials say the data – mainly names, mobile numbers, and email addresses with limited tax IDs and residential details – represent just 2-2.5% of total records.

Still, the sensitive nature of the leak has raised alarm.

One student reported receiving an extortion email, fueling discussions among student groups, faculty, and alumni about lawsuits for moral damages. In response, the university issued a series of alerts, the latest on March 28, urging immediate password changes and detailing enhanced security measures.

The institution insists it will follow proper legal procedures regarding any claims.
