Donald Trump Tariff News Live Updates: Stock indexes tumbled, with the S&P 500 down more than 4% in morning New York trading on Thursday, and the US dollar and oil prices also dropping as President Donald Trump’s drastic trade tariffs stoked fears of a global recession. Investors have since sought safe haven in the Yen and Swiss franc.
The penalties announced on Wednesday also drew condemnation from world leaders — with many calling the tariffs “brutal and unfounded” and a shock for international trade.
India’s commerce ministry is assessing the impact of the 27% reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US, a senior government official said Thursday. The universal 10% tariffs on all imports into the US will take effect from April 5, with the remaining 16% applied from April 10. Meanwhile, experts believe that India’s position remains comparatively more favourable than that of its competitor nations. On the other hand, Indian stock markets opened in the red on April 3 as investors reacted to Trump’s sweeping tariff hikes. Investors remain cautious as global trade tensions escalate.
The official noted that the Trump administration could consider lowering duties if a country addresses US concerns. India is already in talks for a bilateral trade agreement with the US, aiming to finalise the first phase by fall (September-October). The official described the situation as “a mixed bag and not a setback for India.” The announcement was made from the White House Rose Garden at 1:30 am IST with the event being streamed live via the White House social media channels.

Citibank economists predict that India’s central bank will cut rates three more times this year by 75 basis points as the economy’s growth outlook worsens due to import tariffs imposed by the United States. The forecast means that it expects a total of 100 basis points in rate cuts for the year — in line with those predicted by JPMorgan and Nomura.
The Reserve Bank of India cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.25% in February, its first in nearly five years. The 27% tariff imposed by the US on Indian imports could impact GDP growth in 2025-26 by close to 40 basis points, Samiran Chakraborty, Citi’s chief India economist, said in a report.
“If these tariffs lead to a material global growth slowdown, then potentially that could impart a larger negative effect on India’s exports. Also, we are worried that persistent uncertainty around continuously negotiated tariffs could depress private investment intentions and affect GDP growth too,” Reuters quoted Chakraborty as saying.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and Democrat Maria Cantwell — who both serve on the Finance Committee — would require Trump to notify Congress on new tariffs with an explanation of the rationale including an analysis of the potential impact on American businesses and consumers.
Within 60 days, Congress would need to pass a joint resolution of approval on the new tariff, otherwise all new tariffs on imports expire.
The bill is modeled on the War Powers Resolution of 1973, and would reestablish limits on the president’s ability to impose unilateral tariffs without approval from Congress.
