UK is only major economy to put up taxes during cost-of-living crisis, research finds

  1. > What ho, you thronging masses. Are you poor? You are about to become poorer. Jolly good show, eh, what?

    — Tories, seemingly

  2. We’ll do well to find a country screwing its citizens more than ours, we are definitely not all in it together

  3. Well the coffers must be empty with the billions spaffed up the wall on bogus covid contracts.

How’s a Tory donor to afford to put on gratuitous hunting parties for ~~oligarch~~ financial investors in their creative accounting business without a plentiful supply of gratuitous hand-outs on tap.

  4. I think you mean: “UK only major economy truly committed to wringing as much money out of it’s people as possible to send to the already-rich”

It’s a remarkable show to dedication, really.

  5. Seem to remember George Osborne and co being warned off austerity by other developed nations back in 2010/11 too. Tories and their voter base seem to have a habit of thinking they know better than everyone else.

  6. More importantly, it’s which tax the Tories chose to raise: regressive taxation that hits the most vulnerable hardest.

Instead of taxing those who are already wealthy enough to ride any crisis out comfortably, and in many cases, even benefit from the crisis by investing in certain resources, the Tories decided to bleed people who are struggling the most to survive.

And the kicker is that so many people voted for that.

  7. The IFS who said the 2010 Benefit reforms were progressive and had this quote about them *’a body that persistently recommends tax increases that benefit the wealthiest in society at cost to those who make their living from work’*.

If they are saying this so are the fat cats and that’s worrying

  8. Because the Tory’s (sorry, I mean Oligarch Party) cares not for peasents like us and their intention is to drive the gap between the poor, wealthy and ultra wealthy for years and years and years to come

We are all fucked, unless you donate to Tories meaning you’re likely already rich

  9. ‘Conservative think tanks agreed that the population would be able to weather the NI increases if they stopped drinking Costa coffee and popping into Pret for that nice Spinach and Artichoke Grilled Cheese’

  10. Yeah but we could’ve had CORBYN. Is that what you want??? JEREMY CORBYN?? He’s in the IRA AND HEZBOLLAH for god’s sake!!!

  11. I don’t have a problem with increased taxation on the relatively well-off. Unfortunately, the taxation chosen isn’t exactly progressive.

  12. How long can some people cling on to the now clearly false claim that this Tory government are the party of low taxation?

To be fair, the headline may soon be inaccurate, as the way we are going we are going to fall out of major economy status soon…

  13. The problem I have is that, I don’t mind been taxed more if there’s something to show for it and it benefits our society.

But we’re getting taxed more for what? Tories to mishandle taxpayers money, spend it on dodgy contracts and funnel it to their mates? Yeah, fuck off.

  14. Also the only major economy pre-pandemic to cut taxes so much that we can’t even fund basic services like policing, hospitals and schools.

I’m all for the NI rise assuming the money isn’t straight pissed away and actually helps fund our health service.

  15. It’s also the only economy that managed to kill a120000 disabled people out of some ideological insanity.

  16. Oh wait your telling me that after voting tories in repeatedly and also voting for brexit things have gotten worse instead of better? Well that’s fucking magical isn’t it

  17. I really really don’t understand how the Tories can STILL be so popular. Obviously if you are very rich then you’ll love them but what is the thought process of a working class Tory? Is it purely aspirational? “I want to be richer so I’ll vote for the richer people” or do people just trust their posh accents?

  18. Indeed. The highest taxes levied on the nations poorest since the end of the Second World War. A time when the incoming Attlee administration inherited an obscene amout of war debt, and proceeded on a rebuilding programme which included taking millions out of slums and an NHS that was once the envy of the world. Until the tories and their mates got their greedy little mits on it that is.

  19. That’s because the UK government is a bunch of thieving bastards… Up the revolution .. and free speech…

  20. When you see Ireland or France make a good decision and you point it out to the Tories they always respond the same way with British exceptionalism “well thats France, Ireland etc”. 99% of the time what works for one country will work for another.

  21. Come on now, the government needs that money to give to their neighbours, friends and donors!!

If it was being spent sensibly and efficiently on things that improve the lives of British people, I would honestly be ok with it.

    … But it’s not.

  22. Weirdly enough saw this quote during the last election posted by a Tory talking about Corbyns policy to bump up tax for only higher earners… From the lips of Bojo’s idol himself: “I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle”.

  23. The country is a joke honestly, how the fuck did these clowns get in to power? Why the fuck do we sit about and do nothing about it? The French have the right idea, revolt when then goverment takes the piss.
