First time round it was about fish. The second time “the drink” figured largely. Everyone believed Norway’s 1994 second-round “No” on EU membership was the end of the matter.

But now, thanks to Trump’s shenanigans, it is back on the agenda. Oil-rich Norway was set to join the then EEC in 1973 alongside Ireland, the UK and Denmark. But in September 1972, 54pc of Norwegian voters said “No”.
