FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) – The Fairbanks North Star Borough is currently testing out new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.
The purpose of the new buses, according to the FNSB, is to cut down on the use of conventional diesel by using CNG, which is more efficient and environmentally friendly. Of the funds, 80% are covered by a federal grant from the Federal Transit Administration, which means the borough covers 20% of it.
According to Borough Mayor Grier Hopkins, the state of Washington also helped with the budget.
“Use a contract they had in place to help lower the cost of these buses,” Hopkins said. “So, they actually came in under bid, and that’s going to help us also save money as we get them out on the roads in the coming days.”
Hopkins said they are in the final stages of testing and should be fully operational in a matter of days
“We just have to finalize the training for our drivers, our maintenance test, and make sure that the refueling station is running smoothly,” he said.
