Partygate fines: Officials begin to receive £50 penalties following probe into Downing Street parties

  1. I don’t know what I find funnier… that the fines are so pathetically small, that it’s our money anyway so what’s the fucking point, or that even with the application of said fines, because of “optics” the government can’t even admit that these fines represent a criminal act.

And all that might happen afterwards is an “inquiry”, which are typically held to prevent “reocurrence” rather than punish (as far as I can see it) and a little hunch tickles in my mind that perhaps… *perhaps* reocurrence won’t occur anyway following a **once in a lifetime pandemic**.

Absolute mugs. Them for doing it and us for abiding it.

  2. “That’ll teach em”

That £50 will absolutely ensure these Tory party goers wont be able to afford their fuel bills this year. Oh wait…

  3. Given that the government will likely cite individual privacy of civil servants (even if none of the fines have actually gone to any cs), or others “not in the public eye” as a basis to not disclose who has received a fine, I *really* hope someone uses Parliamentary Privilege to name names.

  4. Just remember that a student in Nottingham was handed a £10,000 fine for the same breach… Yeah they broke the law and should be punished but:

    A) The 10k fine was just wildly stupid and over a realistic fine

    B) You can’t then fine MPs £50 for the exact same breach

  5. It should be a maximum fine, apparently at least 371 people have been fined the full £10,000. These aren’t ordinary events, they were attended by the people writing the laws and setting an example which has made new restrictions all but impossible to stomach.

  6. This means nothing without naming names. The actual fine isn’t the point, because let’s be honest they can all easily afford the 50 quid. What *is* the point is having some level of transparency about elected officials and where they’ve broken the rules they either drafted up or at least voted through.

  7. “…Downing Street sources have told Sky News Boris Johnson is not among them” means absolutely sod-all coming from Downing Street.

They are, after all, the ones who said there were no parties, then that there were but Bodger was not there, then that he was there but did not know they were parties. They have literally no credibility whatsoever.

  8. UK Government is really taking the piss. Something has to be done. I don’t know, their houses have to be burned , riots have to happen or something else. Something that shows that British people won’t allow this madness to continue.

I’m serious, if someone told me, hey let’s go burn Bojo’s house to the ground. I’d go

The past year, the UK government has done things which may be considered borderline criminal and they have go on with their lives as nothing has happened.

They say violence is never the answer but what else is left to do ?

  9. Wait a minute. If I had done what they did I would’ve been billed a lot more than 50 quid.

This government is beyond a joke

  10. Meanwhile. Those teenagers were fined 10k each and probably weren’t even at risk. Absolute bullshit. They should be dragged out of Westminster & put behind bars.

  11. What was the initial fine for normal citizens not isolating? Wasn’t it like £1000? Weren’t police stopping people in the street and raiding houses?

  12. I’m getting a £150 fine for accidentally refunding the wrong train ticket and these fuckers that make 50x my salary are getting fine fifty quid!! Fuck right off!

  13. Imagine if these fuckers started the war in Ukraine. I imagine a stern letter from the Met Police accompanied with a £250 fine would in order.

    Fucking Disgrace.
