A Burlington man is facing charges after being arrested for vandalizing five political signs.Burlington police say they received several reports of vandalism on March 25. The first happened around 11:45 a.m.According to a police report, officers questioned a witness, who said he saw a man standing outside of the Republican Party of Burlington spray painting a Brad Schimel and Brittany Kinser political sign. The witness said he stopped his vehicle to inform the man what he was doing was illegal. The witness said the man proceeded to spray paint a second Brad Schimel political sign after being told he shouldn’t.After providing the officer with the suspected vandal’s license plate number, police tracked the man to his home address. According to the police report, when an officer asked the man if he knew the reason why police were making contact with him, he nodded his head and said “yep.”Police say when they asked him if he damaged any other political signs, he shook his head no. Police advised him to stop damaging political signs and that if anyone pressed charges, it could lead to a citation or an arrest for criminal damage to property.Later that same day, police said they received another report of political signs being vandalized. This person provided officers with surveillance video showing a man spray painting a Donald Trump 2024 sign in their yard. Police noted the suspected vandal in the video was the same person interviewed as a possible suspect earlier that day. That victim stated they wanted to press charges. Around the same time, police said they received another report of a Schimel political sign being vandalized in Burlington, making it the fifth sign damaged that day. Police believed this incident involved the same suspect due to the suspected vandal living several houses down the street.After trying to contact the suspect vandal, police say he later agreed to surrender at the Burlington police department where he was booked, cited and released. In the police report, an officer noted that while in the booking room, the man said, “Should have done more, *expletive,* who cares?” while referring to damaging more political signs.In total, one Trump sign, three Schimel signs and a Kinser sign were vandalized on March 25.
