One man has been arrested after a woman was found deceased at an address on Bentbrook Crescent in Barrhaven Saturday night.

The Ottawa Police Service homicide unit has declared the death a “femicide.”

No other details are available.

This is the ninth homicide and second femicide in the city so far this year.

The Ottawa Police Service defines a femicide as the killing of women and girls because of their gender, often driven by stereotyped gender roles, discrimination against women and girls, or unequal power relations between women and men.

“The Ottawa Police Service also builds on the definition recommended by our Violence Against Women (VAW) community partners as ‘the misogynist killing of women and girls because of their gender, overwhelmingly committed by men,’” the police said in a news release on Wednesday, April 2.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the homicide unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or crimestoppers.ca.
