UK’s Online Safety Bill could spell jail time for trolls

  1. This is such a terrible bit of legislation. It can be so widely interpreted it is basically unenforceable. Who gets prosecuted under it will be basically entirely down to who the police decide to go after.

  2. I’ve read the draft legislation and as suspected, the headline is just left wing gibberish. There are no provisions within the draft legislation pertaining to offences for “trolls”. There are provisions that make it an offence to disseminate terrorism content, child sexual abuse content or breaching an OFCOM notice. The legislation will give OFCOM more powers to strike notice, e.g. threatening to kill an MP on Twitter, OFCOM will be able to notice Twitter to take down that tweet or face a fine. It will also become an offence to threaten violence, regardless of digital communication channel against an individual. That’s not a troll but hey, that’s UK lefty headlines for you.

  3. Does that mean I’m going to jail for winding r/europe up when positive brexit news is announced?

  4. It’s very hard to know how to feel about this. On the one hand, this is a massive violation of civil liberties. On the other hand, FUCK online trolls. It’s like, I disagree with it but I wish there were a non-authoritarian way to achieve a similar result.
