Yep. This is the complete backfiring scenario. Just like Jaguar/Land Rover, most companies are likely going to evaluate their American market capacity and seek new foreign markets for growth, in effect divesting from the US.
You really f***ed up when even US companies no longer want to import into the US.
You need certainty to spend 10-100s of millions to build a factory. All of these countries have them already and there are 7.5 billion non Americans to sell to. So multinationals will just fucking bail on us for years…the hit is now being hammered in to their stock price so why move?
Why move if on again off again Donny can’t be trusted to change his mind next week/month. Why move if every American not in his cult, is getting real pissed at his policies? Why move if the midterms are likely to flip the House and maybe the Senate now and then Dems will try clawing back his tariff powers or moving to impeach?
Why move when its 4% unemployment and agriculture can’t find Americans to work shitty jobs, so why will they come rushing in for shitty factory jobs? The middle class factory jobs got automated out of existence decades ago.
Tariffs could have accomplished some of Trumps goals with slow, targeted use with negotiation. Now though? Every time he repeals them for a country he likes, he just convinces more companies to wait and see.
Trump is going to get steamrolled
B- b- b- but america is the only country with money??? Big large economi??? Plis mr company i was number 1??
They tried in the past. It didn’t work at scale.
Too expensive (even with the latest in automation) and they still had to import raw materials.
Why would any company build a major manufacturing plant in the US where major decisions with long term consequences are made by a vengeful l man based on his desire to inflict economic harm on perceived enemies and everyone who isn’t wealthy? And whose decisions change from moment to moment? And who refuses to follow the laws and US Constitution? Even if he leaves office in 4 years, and things normalize, we could be thrown into chaos again the next time another fascist is elected. If I were any other country, I would make sure to establish several other trading partners so I would never again depend on the US for anything.
They are already expensive making it here will essentially put them out of business for not having competitive pricing internationally. Smart move, at least they are honest unlike some others who just make bogus promises and commitment only to not follow through.
