  1. Oh, I’m guessing it was the two mixed race children who were asked this? That would explain his outrage. I would be upset too.

  2. They were probably just telling him how good he was in The Holiday

  3. The same thing happened to us once, and we are all white with the same name.

The border guard directed his questions to my 10 year old son instead of me. When he asked if we were his parents my son replied “I don’t know” He was pretty stressed.

Me, my wife and my other son all yelled his name in exasperation when my son said that. The border guard turned to me and said “Don’t worry sir, we have a holding cell in the basement for kids who get smart with us”

He let us through and we all nervously laughed it off.

  4. I remember a similar thing happening when I was a kid traveling with my parents. A security person was asking us if they were my parents and asked my brother if he packed his own bag (he was like 8 at the time) And he said no. We laugh about it now but it was stressful at the time.

  5. Ahh so everyone dealing with TSA outside of “precheck”.

  6. “Asking questions to confirm validity of your child’s blood relation to you” is so fucking dumb. Kids get stressed. Kids are impressionable. They will respond however adults want them to respond because they seek validation from the people they look up to. It’s so fucking dangerous.

I swear, it was the past month or so that I read a story (in trueoffmychest?) where the above scenario played out and got the dad in *deep* fucking trouble.

  7. This is normal. Customs and TSA do this as standard protocol. It’s a step to make sure children aren’t being taken “kidnapped” against their will. Generally the question is, “Can you tell me who this man/woman is?” They just want a, “that’s my mom/dad.” Answer. It’s not creepy or intrusive. My two children are now at the age where security doesn’t always ask them these questions. But it has never bothered me or my wife. I’m glad to know they’re checked and given an opportunity to speak on their own to an adult who could help them should they ever be in a situation where they need it. Grant’s just grabbing for a headline here.
