Seemed like a milquetoast movie, but hey good for them
And everybody was trashing it when Jack Black was announced. Said it would fail.
Reddit needs to chill the fuck out with the pessimism.
Holy shit! I don’t know what people love more, Jason Momoa or Video Game movies. Whatever saves the theatre experience, I’m all for it.
Oh man, emotionally childlike adult men will absolutely lose their shit over this. The vitriol from grown adults about this movie was absolutely deranged and unsettling. I’m happy it’s doing well!
I saw it. But I knew that if I wanted to see it at the height of itself, I needed to see it in theaters on opening weekend. Even if it was kind of a dud of a movie, the hype from a relatively full theater made the movie much more enjoyable.
In general, it’s the kind of movie that makes a case for keeping movie theaters open. I probably wouldn’t have liked it if I turned it on at home on Netflix in a few months, but I had a decent time in the theater with everybody reacting in real time. Watching people quote the iconic things from the game, or specifically in my case the guy sitting next to me that couldn’t stop saying “WRONG!” or “NOPE!” for every little inconsistency or mistake from the movie (for example – every time a piglin gets killed, they poof into a cooked pork chop. A different enemy does that in game, but not piglins, but the movie had it happen dozens of times.)
Is it a good movie? No, I don’t think anybody (without a financial stake in its success) would say that. It’s entertaining, but doesn’t hold up to even mild criticism. I remember somebody saying it will be the current generations “Napoleon Dynamite” (fitting since it is the same director), in the sense that it’s a bad movie that produces a number of one-liners that people will offhandedly toss out for decades to come. And I think that’s perfect as a review.
The only fun things in this movie were the amount of lord of the rings references. And TechnoBlade
We plan on taking the kids next weekend, our kids love Minecraft.
Took my son and a group of his friends all 15 years old. Theater was packed. Not a seat open probably 300 people in the theater. Pre-Covid the last time I saw that many people at a show. The kids all new different lines to tell during the movie. Very interactive. Everyone clapped at the end. Not an earth shattering movie but a hella good time.
Man I still remember playing the Minecraft Beta release back in 2011, I was 12, I’m now 26. Crazy how far it’s come.
You cannot underestimate the generational love for Minecraft.
My son started playing Minecraft on the Xbox 360 when he was still in grade school. He’s now an adult but was playing it online with friends just this weekend, and he is very excited to aee the movie.
My son and his friend (middle schoolers), absolutely loved it. Called it peak cinema.
Also fun stuffed animal/popcorn buckets that were being sold at the theater. So many kids had stuffed animals. It was really cute!
It is a pretty shit movie though.
Good for them, guess I am just not the targeted audience (which is fine of course), I would have thought that movie would bomb so hard that it would end careers 😅 since Covid I wasn’t in a cinema anymore but will watch tron in one for sure, it’s a bid of a downgrade compared to home cinema but this way I don’t have to wait and I can make an evening with my girlfriend out of it 😀
I took my kid today, and even though I don’t let them play the game yet (though they know a lot about it from their friends and the book series) they really enjoyed the movie. I even chuckled at some parts of it.
Fortnite up next?
Some of us (ok, just me) are wondering what a Minecraft is.
Is it better than Snow White?
That last great depression was really good for ticket sales, too.
Went to an early ish release day showing and the theater was pretty sparse. I was surprised. Once it ended the lobby was packed. It was a wild turn around. This was pretty early on Friday. Once everyone had dinner it was over. Haven’t seen that many in a theater in a long time.
