Don Manning, from Chemainus, is the latest citizen from the Cowichan Valley to receive the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal.

Manning was presented with the award for his historical articles and research about members who served in past military conflicts related to the British Columbia Regiment since its inception in 1883, many of which have been published in The Duke magazine, based in Vancouver.

The British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own) is an armoured reconnaissance reserve regiment and, as such, is tasked with providing qualified reconnaissance soldiers to assist the regular Canadian armed forces in meeting Canada’s military commitments.

Manning is also a member of the British Columbia Regiment’s Museum Society.

He is among at least eight people in the Cowichan Valley who have received the King Charles III Coronation Medal, which celebrates 30,000 Canadians from all walks of life who have made significant contributions across diverse fields, from the local community to the global stage.

Manning said the regiment recommended him for the coronation medal, and he is grateful for the support they extended in recommending him for consideration.

“It is a privilege for me to be able to write the articles I have submitted, over 100 so far,” he said. “It’s my way of bringing back people who have gone before.”
