Sent a closing letter a couple weeks ago (joke in itself tbh) and instead I start getting account management fees. I wait 5 minutes for someone, explain my situation, they asked me to hold for someone else for over 45 minutes before the app ended logging me out.
Will go to their branch but just felt like sharing how ridiculous this is.

I’m always surprised to find out that Sparkasse has a better web-banking and customer support than the commercial banks everyone else is using, but then again I’m paying them 60 Euros per year for the privilege…
At least you have a branch to go to. The stories you hear from N26 customers are even more ridiculous – you can’t even call them unless you are a premium customer, you have to talk to a chatbot.
That’s an even better outcome than running in circles with an online bank AI chatbot.
I start understanding the boomers with their love for brick and mortar banks.
Close it with online website. Use the German website. Use chat gpt. Translate manually. The option is there. And it’s done in a few days
I changed bank as soon as commerz sent the fees email, you can close your account directly online on their website or, depending on your new bank, they should have a service that does that for you.
I suggest DKB, fast, free and reliable.
Switch to Santander or Targobank. Ask them to close it for you. You don’t need to do anything. They will transfer all SEPA mandates and close account for you.
Oh shit…. I’m just about to close my Commerzbank Account too because of the new fees they introduced.
..this could be fun, on the other side they cannot fee me for something I’ve already cancelled and got confirmed.
The 45min is heavy but not unusual… Average time at Bundesagentur für Arbeit or Vodafone Support Hotline
That’s the motherfuckers at Commerzbank for you.
I also cancelled my current account with them last month. I simply used the [account switching service](https://m-n26.kontenwechsel.de/old-bank) of my new bank “N26”. See if your bank offers this too.
It worked wonderfully. Account was cancelled as of 30 March and was no longer accessible via online banking from that date.
