What? And he hates China because…they make products we need that are cheaper than could be made in the US, while supplying us with minerals we can’t get elsewhere? …? Whatever, I’m 40 and have been waiting my whole life for this country to pull its head out of its ass…and we just keep digging deeper for gold. China’s exports to the US accounted for 2.9% of GDP in 2023.
I suspect that China will take a bruise but come out okay. The total value of all exports to the US in 2022 was around $582 billion, which is less than 10% of what the US stock market lost in the last week alone (completely different things I know, but just a ballpark for those who don’t get big numbers).
Soooo if, by his logic, China panicked by retaliating, what the fuck would this response by him be classed as?

I visit the US every so often to visit extended family and I usually get requests for things like UK drinks, chocolate and the occasional multipack of crisps. Think I’m going to start being asked to bring high end hardware in my checked luggage now.
The worst part about this is there’s no reason for him to stop at 100%. He can go to 200%. 300% Whatever the fuck he wants. He could triple the price of shit you import from China for literally no reason.

The US simply no longer has the manufacturing capacity to replace all the Chinese goods it uses. 60% of Walmart and 70% of Amazon inventory is all Chinese. It will take years re-shore all that capacity. And no sane company would invest that amount of commitment in this climate of self-manufactured uncertainty. Till then, enjoy your Taxes. That’s another word for Tariffs!
China is strong. But more importantly, China has as big of an ego, and an international embarrassment is something they would never endure. I would be very surprised if they were to back off.

If Trump did this bullshit and was immediately shut down by Congressional republicans, you could say yeah, there’s some issues with the US, but the country itself is still reliable – Congress stepped up.
But every day the republicans allow this bullshit, it becomes hard and harder to ever be seen as reliable again. For at least a generation – and that’s only if we stop right now and reverse course.

I don’t think the Trump Administration understands that China WILL WIN a trade war. They have more levers to pull. They are not exceptionally reliant on the US. They export to the rest of the world too. The US has far more to lose than China in a trade war. China only loses a single partner in a trade war. The US is losing the entire world as a partner. China can also deliberately sink their currency, further weakening the dollar. They can spank the US harder than anyone is prepared for.
It would be great if we stopped buying cheap disposable shit and produced all our own medical supplies.. but it would be nice if we established those facilities BEFORE tariffs.

China only has to worry about retaliation from the U.S. while the U.S. has to be burdened by retaliations from every other country in the world … which is typically why when one starts a bar fight one doesn’t try to fight everyone in the bar at once …
This one man has too much power. Tariffs were never meant to be controlled by the president. Congress is supposed to have that power.
I get the impression that Trump did not expect retaliatory tariffs. If so, he’s even dumber than I thought.
This could get ugly if Trump brings out the ∞ tariff and China brings out the ∞ +1 tariff.
