Twitter user sentenced to 150 hours of community service in UK for posting ‘offensive’ tweet

  1. That’s potentially life ruining considering I bet you that’s not filtered on a DBS.

Unbelievable you can be charged and sentenced for something so innocent meanwhile actual violent criminals get fucking nothing.

  2. > Moore became a national figure in the UK after walking 100 laps around his garden before his 100th birthday. He was later knighted by the Queen. The day after his death, Kelly, 36, tweeted **“the only good Brit soldier is a deed one, burn auld fella buuuuurn.”**

What a massive overreaction by the legal system. Sure if you said that in person you might get punched depending on where you were, but most folk would just think you’re an insensitive dick.

I don’t think it’s necesarily evil when people are prosecuted for free speech related things if it’s inciting someone else to do something, but this is too far and why some sort of right to free speech law would be beneficial.

  3. > His defense argued that Kelly had few followers on Twitter at the time; that he had been drinking before writing the post; and that he deleted the tweet just 20 minutes after sending it.

I like that the number of followers is brought up. *’I’d like to bring supporting evidence for my client that much like his life outside of the digital world, he has few followers and is, therefore, a Larry.’*

  4. > “His level of criminality was a drunken post, at a time when he was struggling emotionally, which he regretted and almost instantly removed.”

I know he’s already been found guilty and this defence is intended to mitigate the punishment, but this should never have got that far. The guy posted something unpleasant, but something merely being offensive or unpleasant should never be a criminal matter.

    Reminds of that Hall quote:

    > I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

  5. If this had been any other old boy nothing would have come of it. The elevation of Moore’s importance as a public figure during the covid lockdown has caused a gross over the top response.

  6. While it’s good he never got jail for that tweet, he should never have been arrested over it, and certainly shouldn’t have community service over it.

  7. Today I learned that r/unitedkingdom is actually not in favour of *wrongthink* if it’s targeted at someone they are not fussed about.

Just make sure you stay away from any ethnic minorities or cross dressers and you’ll have the full support of this sub.

(Unless you have your pug make a seig Heil)

  8. I’m amazed they actually found an offensive tweet from someone in the country, nearly all abusive tweets originate from outside the UK, must have felt like Christmas.

  9. The gross over-reaction to a tasteless tweet is a sadly telling comment on the nature of the British people. I suspect that the same people who got their angina in a tangle and the veins in their foreheads throbbing over this are exactly the same crowd who get frothy around the aorta about “cancel culture” and end up with lips flecked with spital at the mere mention of any restrictions on free speech.

Source: my parents do this shit unironically all the time – bitch like mad about being offended and complain like fuck about restrictions to free speech. Boomer twats.

  10. Reading this thread side-by-side with the Marcus Rashford one is hilarious. Who could have expected the leopards to eat *your* face? Everyone knows only facists worry about principles and precedent

  11. I feel like you could just have a court verdict of “you’re a right cunt” rather than trying to make an example of someone for doing a tweet

  12. Scary. I wish this country would stop its backslide into authoritarianism. Just turn the screen off if you don’t like what you’re reading online.

  13. It’s not a nice thing to tweet but it is hardly criminal in nature. Unless he planned to hand Capt Moore’s soul over to Satan himself, it is fairly obvious that it is nothing but words.

  14. Whilst I don’t agree with what he said I believe he had the right to say it. This is a slippery slope we are going down. Free speech is a cornerstone of our society and without it I fear where we will end up.

Whilst it may be offensive to many you need to get over it. Nobody has the right to not be offended, feeling offended is an emotion and emotions are personal. Who gets to dictate who’s emotions are more important than others.

  15. If our legal system could stop charging people for writing “offensive” things on social media that’d be great.

    Fucking idiotic.

  16. The sheriff who sentenced this Twitter user for posting a ‘grossly offensive’ tweet also sentenced a man last year for having sex in a car, an act which he deemed ‘reprehensible’. But he did find John Leslie not proven of sexual assault, so there’s that.

  17. So this is a crime but the man who’s been threatening my family member with death for the past 6 months isn’t a criminal and there’s NoThInG yOu CaN dO? Okay police. Okay. Cunts.
