Drivers warned to expect ‘avalanche’ of yellow box junction rules

  1. Very poorly worded headline from the source there. An avalanche of fines, enforcing existing rules.

  2. It’s really easy not to get caught in a yellow box. Look further than your bonnet.

There’s one in Hull which people constantly block, which means I have to wait for the next cycle of green.

Can’t wait till these people get fined.

  3. I think the one that will surprise people most is that you can’t pull out of a junction *into* the box even if it’s there to keep incoming traffic from blocking you. It’s a constant bugbear of mine that I’ll stop outside the box and then the cars from the joining road pile into it.

  4. There are at least 12 regular “white van men” on my school run who pull this crap every morning. (along with the other stuff they’re so fond of; riding the line, inability to decide on lanes etc)

Maybe if they get fined they’ll get fired and f@@k off out of my life the absolute 0unt5.

  5. Tbh, I didn’t even know they weren’t enforced in the rest of the country. Here in London we’ve had yellow box camaras for years.

  6. There’s a few near me, the amount of times i’ve had people beep at me, gesticulating at me and even on the odd occasion, swing around me to move into and thus block an already occupied box junction is staggering.

    I don’t get what’s so hard.

Is there another vehicle in there?

    Yes.

Then don’t move into it you bloody dope.

  7. This is a good thing IMO. A lot of yellow boxes get completely ignored and it makes congestion so much worse. That said, I can see the argument that many could do with a fresh coat of paint before jumping straight to on the spot fines.

  8. People shoving on hazard lights in the most annoying places is what gets it for me.

Other day, a person decided to put their hazard lights on to park just in front of a chicane on the double yellows..

I was very tempted to go along side them and just yell “wanker”, but the lorry driver did that instead behind me by blaring there horn.

  9. I think we need more yellow boxes.

Far too many people force themselves past their traffic lights and block up the junction, so the other side can’t even move when they get the green light.

  10. The worst is when there are two sets of lights not too far away that they both go red simultaneously. You see amber and think you can make it then the next is red by the time you get there… Do you stop and block traffic from the side or just run a red? …..

  11. What we need is a inbuilt traffic light with redlight camera, so many people think if they floor it jumping a red is fine.

  12. As a driver, it infuriates me to see people deliberately ignoring the yellow boxes, seeing there is no room but going anyway to avoid being caught at a red light.

I have, however, seen people being caught in them just because traffic flow has suddenly stopped, frequently because of people pushing into a lane further up. I tend to try and hang back until I can see there’s room.

  13. >”The RAC claimed many motorists will be unfairly punished once councils across England get the power to enforce yellow box junctions.”

No they won’t, they’ll only be punished if they break the rules.

I live in city that has yellow box junction cameras and guess what? I’ve never been caught, neither have any of my friends (to the best of my knowledge). You just stay out of them, yes I accept that is more difficult for drivers of large vehicles like HGVs but the majority of road users are in cars.

    Edit: typo

  14. More regulations and ways to screw even more money out of motorists.

Rather than CCTV cameras handing out automated fines for no reason how about some paid traffic police at major junctions actually directing traffic like they do in every other country on the planet.

  15. >Yellow boxes are used to ensure traffic flows smoothly through busy junctions and motorists should only enter them when their exit is clear or they are waiting to turn right.

Turning right from the major road to the side street isn’t that? In the picture that car is using it unlawfully.

  16. Avalanch of stealth taxes is more to the point.

It’s weird how casual the Conservatives have become about tax rises.

  17. So more road tax then, but in a stealthily mode. I’m shore some traffic light timings are done to trap you in a yellow box, ie you get a green light, but if you go, and there’s heavy traffic, you run the risk of getting trapped and photographed in the box.

  18. The issue here is that when councils catch wind of the money that can be made on them, they’re going to be fucking everywhere in places unnecessary to encourage people not to drive/make money.

  19. I thought they were already enforced?

I got a ticket because the driver in the right hand lane cut into my lane forcing me to stop. Wrote to TFL for footage and then explained to them that I couldn’t have predicted the other drivers move. They let me off as my exit was clear when I entered the box.

  20. I feel like I’m the only person on the road that ever pays attention to this, people get very angry if you wait to enter the box like you’re supposed to.

  21. The simple rule , like in other countries.

“Don’t enter the junction if you can’t leave it before traffic light change” would sort a lot of jams.

…then you have lack of adherence to the law and absolute non existent traffic enforcement so there is that.

  22. Can’t see the problem really…’Highway Code: You can only enter the yellow box at a junction if your exit is clear to do so, except in the case of a Right turn, when you may enter the box and wait for the exit to clear before turning right’ . So that means **ONLY ONE VEHICLE MAY ENTER THE BOX AT ANYTIME UNLESS THE TRAFFIC IS FLOWING SUFFICIENTLY TO ALLOW YOUR EXIT FROM THE BOX, WHEN TURNING RIGHT ONLY ONE…1…UNO…EIN…UN…SINGLE…LONELY VEHICLE CAN STOP IN THE BOX, IF THERE IS A VEHICLE IN THE BOX STATIONARY IN FRONT OF YOU…DON’T ENTER IT!!!!!!!**….simples….

  23. vast majority of traffic problems in my city are caused by people not obeying these meaning that junctions are constantly blocked with stranded cars. more enforcement is a very welcome change for me.

  24. I swear… your leaders have gone mad. You already had enough rules and taxes when I lived there 30 years ago!!

    (I don’t mean that disrespectful like, but…)
