Two young men suffer heart attacks in Madrid half marathon
Two Madrid half marathon runners, aged 20 and 35, suffered cardiac arrest while participating in the 26km race in the capital, race organisers said on Monday.
The 35-year-old runner died after collapsing just 500 metres from the finish line, near Plaza de Cibeles. The younger runner was brought back to life by a spectator who was a doctor and emergency services, but is currently in the ICU.
Fifty other people received medical assistance for heat exhaustion and injuries.

Farmer who let 170 geese starve to death sentenced to 15 months
Spain’s Supreme Court’s criminal division has upheld the 15-month prison sentence imposed by the Córdoba Court on a farmer who allowed 170 geese to die from “starvation and lack of care.”
The high court also confirmed a three-and-a-half-year ban from practicing any profession or trade related to animals.
The man was aware that the geese had no feed or drinking water, except for a small drinking trough and a small rainwater pond in some pens, where they drank, bathed, and defecated.
Around half of Spaniards foresee World War III
A study conducted by 40dB for Cadena Ser radio station and leading national daily El País reveals the increasingly pessimistic outlook of Spaniards regarding the current international climate and growing global threats.
A total of 47 percent of Spaniards surveyed believe that the outbreak of World War III is within the realm of possibility. The majority hold this opinion. 42.6 percent see it as slightly or not at all likely, and 10.4 percent don’t know.
More than half of citizens believe that in the next five years we will have a more violent, authoritarian, and unequal world. Barely one in ten Spaniards believes the near future will be prosperous and stable.
Dani Alves accuser appeals rape conviction overturn
The woman who accuses Dani Alves of raping her appealed on Monday the overturning of the former Brazil and Barcelona star’s conviction that sparked outrage in Spain, her lawyer said.
Alves, 41, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail in February last year after being found guilty of raping a young woman in the VIP bathroom of a Barcelona nightclub on December 31, 2022.
But a Barcelona appeals court overturned the lower court’s ruling on March 28, saying Alves’ trial had inconsistencies and contradictions, and there was insufficient evidence to prove he was guilty.
The complainant’s lawyer Ester García told reporters on Monday that the appeal “was lodged today, which was the last day it could be submitted”.
“For reasons of strategy, the reasons for which we are appealing will not be made public.”
