Due to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, several minor Hungarian–Slovak and Hungarian–Austrian border crossings have been closed. Traffic at the main crossing points is still permitted, but vehicles are subject to disinfection.
To contain the spread of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease, Slovakia has introduced temporary border controls on its internal borders with Hungary and Austria from 8 April to 7 May 2025. The measure affects both passenger and freight traffic: 16 minor border crossings on the Slovak–Hungarian border and 20 – mostly low-traffic – crossings on the Austrian–Hungarian border have been closed.
According to the Hungarian Road Transport Association (MKFE), the Slovak government made the decision on 7 April, after new infection clusters were identified in the regions of Bratislava, Trnava and Nitra. These restrictions have already been in place since 26 March on the Hungarian side of the Danube, but the continued spread of the disease has led to a tightening of the measures.
According to the Hungarian police, the following Slovak–Hungarian crossings have been completely closed:

Authorities urge both commuters and other travellers to check the latest updates before setting off and, if possible, to postpone their journeys. The official police website is being updated continuously with the latest information on border traffic.
