King Charles praised the Italian Ambassador to the UK, Inigo Lambertini, during a poignant meeting inside Quirinal Palace today.
The King and Queen were joined by Italian president Sergio Mattarella and his daughter, Laura, who introduced them to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani; Italian Ambassador to the UK Inigo Lambertini; Secretary General of the Quirinale, Mr Ugo Zampetti and Diplomatic Counsellor to the President, Ambassador Fabio Cassese.
The King said of Mr Lambertini: “We are very lucky to have him.”
Elsewhere, the monarch, who was speaking through an interpreter, told the Italian president: “This is my 18th visit here.”
To which Mr Mattarella replied: “And I remember having you here at the Quirinale before on your visits to Rome.”
Following a private meeting, Their Majesties were presented with honours – the King received the Knight Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of Merit and presented the President with the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.
The Queen received Dame Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy.
Charles said after exchanging honours: “It goes back quite a long way. It’s just a token really of our appreciation, you’ve served for so long,” to which Mr Mattarella replied: “I’m humbled, your Majesty.”
