  1. As a Finnish person, I am sincerely welcoming Iceland to join the EU.

  2. I bet this number will skyrocket once Trump starts saying he wants to annex Iceland

  3. It’s lower than in 2022 when it was 47% according to the diagram. It would have been more interesting if it had increased from 44% to 47%.

  4. Weird way to say “56% of Icelanders not interested in EU.” Respect democracy, in this case they don’t want EU.

  5. To clarify, 44% are for joining, 36% are against, and 20% are neutral

  6. I have a feeling a lot of businesses in Iceland would not be in favour of it because of the natural monopoly that Iceland has.

  7. Just like 2008? When shit hits the fan, Iceland flirts with joining. When shit cooled down, they back out.

Funny that joining becomes a topic again as the island is set to have much larger vulcanic activity in the next few years again.

  8. Want them to join the eurozone just to have coins with Mjöllnir on them like pagans intended

  9. We need Iceland for national EU security. The Viking tribes have long neglected Iceland and now China is coming. We cannot risk it.

  10. I would have thought it would be much more than that

  11. Honestly as someone who loves the EU I don’t want any country who doesn’t strongly want to join. Iceland can stay out of the EU if that’s what they want. Seems like a massive own goal from them but we’re not imperialists here.

  12. So Iceland as a whole is against it then, that’s the actual takeaway

  13. EU would be doing a lot better in these polls if they got rid of or reformed the common fisheries policy

  14. This isn’t neo-imperialism, we don’t need to “annex” to profit from each other. Can we just stick to trading?

  15. Maybe there should be some reform to the fishing laws under the EU to make Iceland and Greenland more willing to join the European union. Hell maybe even the UK eventually

  16. As an Irishman I’m supporting Iceland’s entry as it’s getting lonely out here in the Atlantic 🥲

  17. That is surprisingly low support for the eu. Is there a reason why they don’t like/trust the EU.

  18. I already thought they were? Don’t tell Trump. I can see Britain rejoining, and I voted Brexit.

  19. To be honest, people in general just dont know what being in the EU looks like for us, there hasnt been a genuine neutral discussion publicly to explain what joining the EU will change and what it won’t change.

If Norway joins the EU we will be forced to follow, but we never really got to see what our contract would look like as one of the conservative parties here put discussions on ice with the EU when it was time to vote on wether we should join or not.

Unfortunately the propaganda machine is very strong against the EU here and is mostly funded by the fisheries “mafia”. Until they make information accessible and easily understandable for the average Joe these statistics won’t really change in terms of support.

  20. The French will not stand for any fishing right reforms in the EU what so ever. Neither will they stand for agricultural reforms.

But seriously it’s not like Norway, Iceland, the UK or Greenland always have the best policies either. And Norweigan salmonfarms are destroying even for their Nordic neigbours(forget Greenland, they can have their fishes as long as they bring some minerals if they join France sends their regards too and would be very happy with rare earth metalls to forget any oversized fishing right ; ) ).

But as a Swede I really recomend our Icelandic brothers and sisters to really straighten up and get their asses straight into the European Union assap.

No matter if Trump will force Greenland to join the US or not, one can be pretty certain that the race in the artic are about to happen. Svalbard, the norweigan territory, might even be in greater danger than meets the eye. If my Icelandic brothers and sisters wait too long, even longer than it takes for Russia to paus their euroaggressions, Russia could use Iceland as a bric to get the EU to promise that Iceland can not join the EU. To wait until Russia sees leverage again will be very very foolish.

We are waiting for you but the clock is ticking. You do not want to wait until the bells tolls for Iceland either by Russian forcierings or in panic with very little chace of okej EU negotiation for Iceland. Either way your fishing right would be screwed if so. Icelands government do not have all the intel of Rissia. Far to small to sit by the big table. Icelands citizens does best to vote yes.

It’s up to themselves but as a Nordic friend, I hate to lose Iceland or that Iceland will be forced later on. Take a long time, but not to long, to think about your opinions.

    Best regards: Sweden.

  21. Icelanders should decide for themselves about EU membership. But please be vocal about Trump’s plans to annexate Iceland, because he is serious.

  22. Since birth, the right-leaning political parties and the 1% have been heavily opposing joining the EU, paid unbelievable amount in advertising and promoting anti EU.

So the fact that 44% are for it, and only 36% are against it, is quite good.

  23. I think we should abolish the veto before letting in any new members. The idea that a country with the population of just under 400k people could block EU policy is crazy.

  24. Matter of time, before they will get the once in the lifetime opportunity to became the 51 state of a friendly new empire…

  25. this is how I find out Iceland isn’t in the EU

  26. They are in the Single Market via EFTA and that’s probably enough for them. It would work for the UK too.

  27. The upcoming referendum should be used by the EU to improve the process of accession and also the long term relations with its future members by requiring a super majority.

Brexit proved that a simple majority is highly divisive and thus it’s better if Iceland doesn’t become a member at all, unless 2/3 of its voters back it.

2/3 is what many countries require for a constitutional change, and EU membership is so high impact for a country’s constitutional setup that it should also be supported by a similar share of the voters.

  28. If a country wants to join the European Union at least two thirds of the population should be in favour of that step ( in my opinion )

  29. They should join USA then they could get PRESDIENT TRUMP!! Maga!

  30. One thing that Trump and Putin have gloriously achieved is to smash the ‘sovereignty’ myth that became so prolific during the Brexit debate. A country is never ‘sovereign’ in the modern world. If you’re not part of something bigger like the EU, then you’re America’s, China’s or Russia’s bitch. For all its inefficiencies and bureaucratic absurdities, the EU is the last truly democratic superpower in the world. And with NATO looking tenuous, a lot of countries are seeking security in something more stable.

It’s quite comical watching Britain scramble around suddenly acting like it’s part of the EU again, now that the “special relationship” has been definitively exposed to be more of an abusive marriage.

  31. If the vote is close to 50/50 and they join we kinda have a failure of dynamic democracy…
I would honestly love for them to join us.
As nordics it would make sense to have Norway and Iceland onboard since the utopic dream of having our own nation doesn’t seem to be happening.

  32. “Guys! That means 56% are in favor of joining the US instead! Forget about Greenland, we want Iceland now!” – JD Vance, forwarding the article to the Signal group chat… probably.

  33. I hate my ppl so often it never ends. I hope eu can help my countrymen see the corruption but it will always be more and more of a distant dream

  34. I always thought Iceland was a part of the EU. Mind is blown right now.

  35. We coul easily push that up by making fishing regional rather than EU wide, Western Europe could be one block and the nordic countries another.
