Croatia will significantly increase its investment in defence, aiming to allocate 2.5% of GDP by 2027 and 3% by 2030, Defence Minister Ivan Anušić announced in his opening address at a military conference, reports HRT

“Many European and global nations have begun seriously considering their security and preparing for potential threats that currently loom over European soil,” said Anušić. He added that Croatia is actively developing its domestic defence industry and strengthening cooperation with international allies. The military conference and exhibition, he noted, serve as a platform for bilateral talks and collaboration.

“Our strategy is to support companies that are developing new technologies and knowledge. We also aim to become self-sufficient in producing at least part of the equipment and weapons used by our armed forces,” he said.

Minister Anušić also addressed the potential impact of U.S.-imposed tariffs on Croatian manufacturers. Speaking during a visit to the Adriatic Sea Defense & Aerospace (ASDA) exhibition, he confirmed that the government is ready to assist domestic producers if the trade measures remain in place.

“If the tariff war continues, we’re prepared to help. How and in what way—that will be discussed with the finance minister,” said Anušić.

One of the companies that could be affected is HS Produkt, a key supplier of machine guns and pistols to the Croatian military and an exporter to the U.S. market. “They’ve told us they can manage the situation for now, and we’ve expressed our willingness and desire to support our industry,” Anušić added.

Leopard Tanks and Air Defence on the Horizon

By 2028, Croatia will receive Leopard tanks, which are currently in the negotiation and purchasing phase. As early as the end of this year, 10 to 14 replacement Leopard tanks will be delivered for training purposes.

“We must transition from Eastern to Western technology. As a NATO member, this is our obligation. The Leopard tanks are undoubtedly among the best in the world,” Anušić said.

In addition to tanks, Croatia is set to acquire air defence systems in the near future, with that project currently in the implementation phase.
