After months of speculation, 1News can reveal Christchurch has won the race to be New Zealand’s second Supercars venue, with Ruapuna Park signing a multi-year agreement, beginning next year.
It’s understood Ruapuna Park, near the international airport on the western fringe of the city, won the bid for its location, plus the accommodation and hospitality infrastructure in Christchurch.
It also came down to funding.
Cromwell’s Highlands Park also had a bid in but it has been reported that the Government was not willing to pump any extra into Central Otago’s economy, as Queenstown is already a significant drawcard.
The first round for Ruapuna next year will run alongside Taupō’s event which is locked in until 2026.
1News understands a formal announcement from Supercars is imminent.
