  2. Well said, but I would love to hear that retaliatory tariffs for ‘liberation day’ are still to come. 10% is still a lot higher than EU charges for imported goods from US. Even before negotiations – we need to show that extortion will never work and either Trump will accept mutually beneficial deal or can GTFO.

  6. The EU should aggressively lobby for American companies assembling Chinese parts for reexport to move their manufacturing to Europe, especially Eastern Europe. More stable and cheaper workforce and Polish, Czech and Slovakian workers are more skilled than Yankees.

  10. What pause? There is still a 25% aluminium tariff active, and a 25% on autos, and a 10% on everything… The rumour is that Trump intends to tax pharmaceuticals too and God knows what else.

    Any trade deal, new or old, with the americans is useless. Because they don’t respect anything, they are no better than the russians.

  11. Can’t blame her. How can you trade with a country that flip flops so much on tariffs etc. if you don’t know how much it costs to trade with someone day by day or week by week it’s difficult to plan for a long term trade relationship.

  16. Absolutely. The US government has signalled it doesn’t want to get rich with us, but loot its own citizens and stock market instead. Fair enough: good luck to those seeking to limit its power to do that, and let’s insulate ourselves from it as much as possible so it can’t do it again in future.

    Time to invest harder in renewables. I hear China makes shitloads of really nice solar panels for example. And we need to put up some more wind farms. There’s a golf course in Scotland that would look really nice surrounded by turbines, for example.

    And if the US premier insists on putting those tariffs in place in 90 days’ time, then he should be educated on what *reciprocal* actually means.

The biggest threat to trade is unpredictability, so Trump’s 90 day pause does not really change much- it is just another sign that he is out of his depth, advised by fools and not safe to trade with. He is making the US look like a weak and unreliable partner, and so other countries have to plan without the US, which hurts the US more than anyone.

  19. The ‘clear message’ is that the EU walked back on counter tariffs on american alcoholica, after Trump threatened 200% tariffs on wine and others from the EU.
    Also: The full implementation of EU-tariffs is only due in December.

  20. I’m currently trying to work out pricing into the US for two products, one from China and one from Canada. I cannot find anywhere where the US gov websites can tell me an up to date figure on tariffs based on an HS code. So I can’t do this. So we concentrate on markets where we can make strategic decisions like this. Maybe we could move production to the US but materials costs are so random that nobody could produce a quote. Essentially it’s not possible to work under this regime and they really need to sort it out or they’re heading back to an agrarian society.

  27. This is sad because open trading between the US and EU underpinned the current world order. 

    This order has not been great for a lot of the world but is now likely to get a lot worse – more like the 19th century great game.

    The US decided to weaponise the relationship, which was probably inevitable, but the trading agreements that replace the US with other countries will be low-trust from the outset.

    The US has enjoyed the massive privilege of the dollar being the reserve currency of the global economy.

    It makes it easy to trade for the entire world but it also allowed the US to not care about their deficit like other countries have to since they literally control the currency.

    It’s a win win for everyone involved except for China who wants to take the US’s place

    However, the US now wants their cake and eat it too.

    Not only do they want to continue having the privilege of controlling the world’s reserve currency they also want other countries to pay for the US to have this privilege.

    This is why they are so obsessed with their trade deficit now. They ideally just want other countries to send in cheques to cover the deficit.

    The little stunt Trump pulled over the past few days was a message to the rest of the world: “You either play ball and pay us or we’ll plunge the entire world into a recession”.

    We need to shut this shit down and stand our ground but knowing the EU, we’re gonna bow and grovel cause it’s in our leaders’ interest to maintain the current capitalistic order.

    If China were to dethrone the US, we would have to adopt their more socialistic/communistic order and controlled markets to compete with them. People obviously don’t want that cause then you’d have to heavily subsidise your domestic industries which would ultimately require a large increase in taxes and since us regular folk barely have anything more to give, they’d eventually have to go after billionaires and their profits. And we obviously can’t have that.

  29. The Euro is far more stable and needs to be the reserve currency. Trust in anything American is completely lost.

  30. I really think this just shows the problems of having a global reserve associated with a single nations currency and how Keynes was correct.

    The US wants others to effectively be vassals and peg their economies to that of the US, meaning the next time the US makes a crazy decision to start a war, everyone else’s economies will be impacted. Or any other crazy economic decision they choose to make.

  31. Enough of the Trump psychodrama. The US can never be trusted again. We could wake up tomorrow for Trump so have suddenly decided 100% tarrifs on anyone. He is impuslive, irrational, incoherent, and obviously utterly unreliable. And US citizens knew this and elected him anyway – they cannot be trusted either. History will look back on “liberation day” as the end of the beginning of the fall of US dominance – we’re at the point where the world has no choice but to decouple from the US as much as possible.

    Trump thinks world trade is transactional like a New York City real estate deal: act strong and like a bully, corner weak opponents, and get the max out of every situation.
    The EU knows it is 4D chess: many markets touch on many negotiations at the same time, everything is connected, and every player is in it for the long run.
    There is, after the last 30 years, no doubt the EU has negotiated far better deals for itself than the US. The reason: Trump gave up playing 4D chess (the Clinton-Bush-Obama administrations still did). While EU negotiators are among the most respected trade negotiators in the world. No one can afford to ignore them. Laugh at them at your peril.
    The general public often doesn’t understand why the EU proposes particular things the way they do; and fools like to spin it as weak, or disorganized.
    To those people I say with a smirk: look again. You’re missing something 😂🤓

  33. Today it’s 90 day pause, tomorrow it could be 180 days of tariffs followed by another 45 days pause followed by another 90 days of tariff. Trusting America at this point is like cutting the branch you sit on.

    Europe should and must look to diversify and make favorable trade agreements with rest of the world.

  34. Now the US has tariffs down for most of the world, and the world will keep retaliatory tariffs up, Trump managed to get tariffs up for the US worldwide while keeping American markets wide open. Art of the deal indeed.

  38. China wins from this, it’s long been kept at arms length by countries, isolated. It’s hard not to see this as a tactic to dismantle the worlds economic balance to the benefit of countries like Russia and China.

  40. Lame and weak. We could have worked with everyone to crater the US economy and had the criminal US administration removed by EOW. The real short-term pain for long-term gain. Now the world will have to deal with him for the next 4 years, and if he manages to take out China, he’s coming after us next… And if he doesn’t, we’ll have to deal with rightfully pissed off China, because none of the “rule of law” countries stood by them in face of clear abuse of power.
