British Gas and EDF Energy websites not working on final day to submit meter readings

  1. Oh, looks like E.ON having the same issues…

Well, they moved me to E.ON Next but it won’t let me login. It keeps throwing up an error saying my login details are incorrect (they’re not) and when I go to reset my password it says there has been an ‘Unknown Error’.

  2. Scottish Power are down and apparently Shell Energy too. Seems all too convenient the day before the prices rocket and websites are taken down for maintenance.

  3. well it’s obvious isn’t it, they’ve crashed under the weight of last minute usage – you’d expect them to extend the deadline though.

  4. What the fucking fuck?! I’m doing my readings at about 10pm tonight and I’ll be taking photographs of the meter. They can use those as proof of timing.

  5. Everybody submitting super-high meter readings to secure the most usage at the lower rates….. or does it not work like that?!

  6. I managed to get a leccy reading in on the Shell website a couple of hours ago.

My advice is to take photos of your meter.

  7. I did mine with eon yesterday. Went from £150 in credit, to £360 in debit. So thats nice.

To he fair, its the first reading I’ve given them in about 6 months, so it’s my own fault.

  8. I just had a text from British Gas to submit a reading by replying to that. So I’ve done that at the very least.

  9. I think we all understand that this is due to demand, but you’d think at least one of these billion pound companies would have anticipated the increased demand

  10. Why cant we just get to the point where you just pay for what you use?

We have a thing on the side of our house that counts how much energy we use. It can’t be too difficult to pay for exactly what we use rather than this “we set a fixed direct debit so you go into credit over the summer to pay for the winter” bullshit.

Its a way for them to hold onto your money.

I got switched to EDF when utility point went under and they’ve put my direct debit up a lot and I assumed it was just this price hike thing and Im now like £400 in credit because they fucking guessed wrong.

  11. Also E.ON Next, for which the Home customer helpline is also engaged. Instead, I called the business helpline and could type in my meter readings, no problem.

Anyone with E.ON needs it, the number is: 0808 501 5699

  12. They could’ve done something to increase their website capacity, especially as they knew today would see high volumes of meter readings.

But why the fuck would they help anyone?

  13. SEND AN E-MAIL with PHOTO AND DATE. Do not wait for the website to come back. E mail is enough of a proof.

  14. I had a text from British Gas, so that’s one way to avoid their website (doesn’t work half of the time nor their app). Although I’m on a fixed so probs no point as it won’t change my price

  15. Nothing sinister here, too many people are trying to do it at once. Same way a DDOS attack works. All they could have really done is implement a digital queue system to spread out the demand, like when you get tickets for Glastonbury or book a covid vaccine.

I just managed to submit mine to British Gas, just had to try clicking the button a few times after it initially failed but got there in the end.

  16. Don’t get me wrong it’s a good thing that Martin Lewis encouraged everyone to do this and that the news did too, but it’s basically created a digital version of what happened when the media spun the fuel shortage up to a nightmare and it then became said nightmare because of the panic buying. Not identical, but hysteria fuelled for sure.

  17. For anyone in a panic about this – when you provide a meter reading it will ask you to submit the date it was taken. Therefore whilst you should take a reading today (or tomorrow), you should also be able to provide this once the rush has settled in a few days. Additionally if you have a smart meter this should be done automatically (but worth taking a manual read just in case). Additionally additionally if you are on a fixed tariff nothing will change from tomorrow so there’s also no need to do this.

  18. I got really lucky and Bulb’s site is still working. It did have a queue system that I’d never seen before but hopefully all the others come up soon too

  19. PSA: You can take the meter readings today, and submit them in a few days time. Most if not all suppliers give you the option to select the date the reading was taken.

The typical faux reddit rage is hilarious though.

  20. For anyone worrying, Martin Lewis recommended taking photographs of your meter readings with a datestamp if possible. Besides that I also imagine the photographs metadata would divulge the date and time it was taken.

The alternative is email it to yourself or a family member, which will also give you a dated email with the photos on you can use to prove you took them today.

  21. Octopus Energy’s website is struggling, but they’ve got a message saying that they will be accepting late readings (until Saturday at midnight).

  22. Octopus is still working. And says

    > We’re super busy today so you might have a long wait if you call. The best day to give us a meter reading is this Saturday (our standard variable prices don’t change until 00:00 Saturday 2nd April.) Make a note of your readings or take a photo of them on Saturday. When we receive this reading we will apply it to your account from 00:00 midnight on the Saturday. You will have a week to submit them to us, so please don’t worry if you can’t get it to us that day.

  23. British Gas has this on their main page
    > We’ll get things back up and running as soon as possible. So if you’re struggling to submit yours, please try again later. If you can’t do it today, we’ll also have a form available at https://www.britishgas.co.uk/energy/submit-meter-read.html, so you’ll still be able to send us your reading for the 31st March over the next few days which we’ll use to make sure your bill is accurate.

  24. Final day to submit readings? The hell does this mean? We back date charges if you say I had a reading last month we’d input it for last month and then charge it as we would then.
There’s no deadline, just record the date and take a photo if you want security.
