Lithuania intends to apply national economic sanctions against Russia and Belarus if the European Union does not continue them. This was reported by LRT, reports UNN.
Details
The Seimas of Lithuania proposes to supplement the draft law on the establishment of restrictive measures in connection with the Russian military aggression against Ukraine and Belarus’ participation in it. The document provides for the extension of sanctions for another year, i.e. until May 2026.
This proposal was voiced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, but it is planned to register it through a parliamentarian or a group of them, since the Seimas has the last vote left before the adoption of the law.
The draft law states that the mechanism for imposing national sanctions against Russia and Belarus will be applied as an “extreme measure”.
The term of the EU sanctions against the Kremlin expires at the end of July 2025. When trying to extend the restrictions, the EU recently faced objections from Hungary.
Let us remind you
Minister of Justice of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna stated that Ukraine is ready to provide the European Union with all information about the involvement of sanctioned persons in financing Russian aggression.
