CADILLAC — Every year, April 22 marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

While Earth Day began during a time when Americans were less concerned with pollution and its effects, environmental issues remain pressing today. Though significant strides have been made in environmental protection, challenges like climate change and pollution in the air and water persist.

More than 50 years ago, Earth Day 1970 capitalized on the emerging political consciousness of the era, channeling the energy of the anti-war movement and placing environmental concerns at the forefront. For years, Cadillac has celebrated conservation in conjunction with the annual event — and will do so again in 2025.

With Earth Day falling on a Tuesday and the Easter holiday occurring the weekend before, organizers opted to hold Cadillac’s Earth Day celebration the following weekend — Sunday, April 27. The event is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Cadillac Commons on Lake Street.

The family-friendly event will feature dozens of educational and environmentally themed vendors, live music, kids’ activities and giveaways. The first 200 attendees will receive free tote bags and tree seedlings.

Caddy Bear will make an appearance, and the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau’s Jeep will be on-site.

Earth Day volunteer organizer Chad Phillips said the event is fun and educational for all ages but places a strong emphasis on children.

“There is something for everyone, but it’s especially valuable for kids to learn about conserving our natural resources,” he said.

While the event has recently been held in the Market at Cadillac Commons, Phillips said it won’t be this year due to construction. Instead, it will take place on South Lake Street, between West Cass Street and West Harris Street. The road will be closed during the event.

Phillips said the goal is for attendees to walk away with a greater understanding that Earth’s natural resources are finite and that collective action can make a difference.

“We all rely on the Earth to sustain us. The more knowledgeable we are about taking care of this one thing we all have in common, the better off we’ll be,” he said.
