  1. From the article-

No role of law enforcement agencies was observed during the attacks, vandalism, and looting on Monday. Even though an area in Sylhet was attacked three times, the police did not take action. The army, which has the power of a magistrate, did not come either.

Protests were held in various parts of the country on Monday to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and protest against Israeli attacks. During the protests, more than a dozen businesses, including KFC, Pizza Hut, and Bata, were attacked, vandalized, and looted. The failure of the police and the army to control such incidents has raised many questions.

Asked why the police did not try to stop or control the attackers, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam told Deutsche Welle, “What were the few police officers supposed to do among so many people? In the Khulna video, you can see that 10-12 police officers were standing there. But there were thousands of people in the protest. How could the police control so many people? Yes, we could have fired. But that policing of the last 15 years is no more. We don’t shoot at the crowd. In a country where 90 percent of the people are good and 10 percent are bad, the police can take action against those criminals. Now if 90 percent of the people participate in such activities, what will the police do there? But later we arrested 56 people. After watching the video, those involved in the incident are being arrested.”

On Monday evening, vandalism and looting were carried out at KFC and Domino’s Pizza in the Moylaponta area of Khulna city and at Bata showroom in Shibbari area. KFC and Domino’s Pizza restaurants are located in the same building. At the same time, the Bata showroom located under Tiger Garden Hotel in Shibbari intersection was vandalized.

Three times a day in Sylhet

Sylhet was also in a state of turmoil on Monday with various protest programs. In the afternoon, a protest march in the city’s Mirboxtula area led to widespread vandalism at KFC. Then, about 10 establishments including Bata, Unimart, Alpine Restaurant were vandalized and looted.

Faisal Ahmed Chowdhury, the owner of the building where KFC is located in Sylhet, told Deutsche Welle, “In the first phase, the protesters broke the KFC. I understand that they broke the KFC out of emotion. But in the second phase, they broke all the glass in front of the building. Then in the third phase, they came with more preparations and came with rods and machetes and vandalized my Royal Mark Hotel. Where were the law enforcement agencies when the attackers vandalized in these three phases? At first, they didn’t understand – I understood. But they didn’t come after that. Some unruly boys came indiscriminately and broke it three times, no one said anything.”
