April 12, 2025: Prince Harry is once again making headlines from the courtroom—not the palace—as he battles for the right to personal security for himself and wife Meghan Markle during visits to the UK. After two intense days at London’s Royal Courts of Justice, the Duke of Sussex confessed, “My worst fears have been confirmed… and that’s really sad.”
Now 40, Harry told People magazine he feels “exhausted and overwhelmed,” revealing just how personal the latest legal proceedings have become.
The legal dispute stems from the UK government’s 2020 decision to remove Harry and Meghan’s automatic taxpayer-funded security following their decision to step down as senior royals and move to California. Despite no longer being working royals, Harry insists that the risks to his family haven’t lessened.

Meghan’s Security in Spotlight
While Harry faced legal stress in London, Meghan Markle made a highly visible appearance in New York City, where she was seen attending Broadway’s Gypsy. What turned heads, however, was not the show, but the four-car motorcade —including three SUVs and an unmarked NYPD-style vehicle—that escorted her through the city.

A paparazzi insider told Page Six the security measures seemed “absolutely abnormal, totally over-the-top and excessive,” sparking criticism over who footed the bill. Neither the NYPD nor Markle’s rep have commented on the matter.
Public and Private Safety
Harry and Meghan have been vocal about their security fears. Following a “near-catastrophic” paparazzi car chase in NYC in 2023, their reps said the couple were “shaken” and cited “multiple near-collisions.” NYPD officials, however, downplayed the incident, saying there were “no collision reports or 911 calls.”
The royal couple’s desire for robust protection has reignited debates over royal privilege, public funding, and celebrity security ethics—particularly as the couple maintain their high-profile lives in the US.
Where Things Stand
Harry is appealing a High Court ruling that upheld the government’s decision to scale back his security. He insists that despite stepping back from royal duties, his status and risk profile still warrant state-backed protection.
Meanwhile, Meghan’s separate controversies continue to stir public opinion, with many seeing a disconnect between the couple’s complaints and their public appearances.
