Well, there were more conflicts in Europe at that time and Europe was not the same united bloc as it is today while Finland was offered military help and various aid, afaik Norway played in role in blocking help from the UK, France, US as they were neutral at that time and various soldiers from all across Europe came to volunteer fight against the russians but there were more barriers than today.
The Soviet Union was kicked out of the League of Nations among other sanctions.
I used to think I was such a smartass, when I saw Finns talk about the Winter War with pride, I would go, “but you lost”.
Seeing such a similar event happen in real time, during my lifetime, has made me realise what an asinine response that was.
So, sorry, I certainly won’t make that mistake again.
Finland should be proud of the resistance they showed. As Ukraine should be proud of the resistance they are showing.
Lol, suddenly Finland experience from 1939-1940 is relevant somehow but firsthand experiences of Baltic states, Poland , Ukraine, Slovakia, Czechia, Hungary etc from1939-1989 were and are irrelevant. Nobody knew how Moscow operates, there was not a clue the West and Germany could or would see. Decades of warnings and pleads were shunned as Russophobic. Thank the gods for Finland, without her we wouldn’t know what Russia is.
Now I’m not a history expert, but my understanding is that there were some other things going on around 1939 or thereabouts that mean a few other European countries have similar experience too.
