I was locked out of my apartment and luckily, only shut the door, didn't lock it. The emergency helper who arrived first tried to open it using hard plastic(that thick white sheet). He then told me this is a new kind of door and it needs to be broken. So, here we are.

After that happened, I sent an email to my apartment management and they said they will obtain an offer to fix it and forward it to me. It has been a long time and they haven't.

The guy who broke the door also told me this is easy to fix. Just get a new one and install it.

So, can someone actually help me understand how I am supposed to fix it as installing a new one does not look that easy. I have tried to force remove the handle but that does not work.

Also, can someone tell me what would be the process to hire someone to install it if I get a new one by myself?

Should I contact the management again?

I have also had trouble finding the exact one in the market so a little help on that would be appreciated.

  1. Remove the handle from the inside, after that you can remove the cover from the inside, it should only be attached and can be leveled off. After removing the cover you should see three screws. After removing the screws you can remove both plates.

Mount the new door fitting in reverse order.

  2. Installing a new one is pretty straightforward, if you manage to find the exact same model. The logo is of the manufacturer “Hoppe”. Maybe your local hardware store can help you identify the model. I suggest taking photos with rulers for scale so you get the measurements right.

    Now for the disassembly.
You should first remove the remaining handle. There should be a grub screw on the bottom of the handle or the side.
The tricky part is identifying what kind of grub screw is being used here. There is the normal kind – a small hex screw that can be unscrewed with a small hex key. Then there is the other kind which is hard to identify if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Basically if you can not unscrew it with a hex key it is pretty much guaranteed to be the latter. In stat case you can try to wiggle the grip free which might take some time, ~~or you can take the smallest flathead screwdriver~~ handle sets by Hoppe usually come with the right tool (looks like a round Allen key with the short end having a small flathead), insert it into the hole (yes, the round hole) and try if you get any purchase, and pull the handle while turning the screwdriver like the spanner of a lockpick. The handle should now become loose.

Next you want to remove the cover. There should be a slit at the bottom of the cover where you can pry it open with a (bigger) flathead screwdriver. Once the cover is removed you should see some screws. Loosen them and the rest of the set should come lose.

Assembly is pretty much everything I described above in reverse order. I really recommend getting the exact same model of handle set, since you wouldn’t want to install a set mismatching the screw holes if possible.
