In 2024, fluoropolymers consumption in the European Union was estimated at 98K tons, rising by 12% compared with 2023. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, consumption hit record highs at 121K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The size of the fluoropolymers market in the European Union rose slightly to $2.1B in 2024, with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers’ margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2024 were Italy (20K tons), Germany (17K tons) and Spain (12K tons), with a combined 51% share of total consumption.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +2.6%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($401M), Spain ($329M) and Italy ($250M) were the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2024, together accounting for 47% of the total market. France, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Romania and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

In terms of the main consuming countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +4.7%, saw the highest growth rate of market size over the period under review, while market for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The countries with the highest levels of fluoropolymers per capita consumption in 2024 were Italy (345 kg per 1000 persons), Austria (333 kg per 1000 persons) and Belgium (325 kg per 1000 persons).

In 2024, production of fluoropolymers in the European Union stood at 81K tons, almost unchanged from 2023 figures. Overall, production, however, showed a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 112K tons. From 2015 to 2024, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fluoropolymers production dropped to $2.2B in 2024 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the production volume increased by 33%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $2.3B in 2023, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2024 were France (18K tons), Italy (12K tons) and the Netherlands (11K tons), together accounting for 51% of total production.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +2.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

ImportsEuropean Union’s Imports of Fluoropolymers

In 2024, the amount of fluoropolymers imported in the European Union reduced to 65K tons, shrinking by -14.7% compared with 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 91K tons. From 2022 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fluoropolymers imports shrank significantly to $1.3B in 2024. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2013 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $1.8B in 2023, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports By Country

In 2024, Italy (20K tons) and Germany (16K tons) represented the largest importers of fluoropolymers in the European Union, together constituting 56% of total imports. Belgium (8.3K tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by France (4.6K tons). All these countries together held near 20% share of total imports. The following importers – the Netherlands (2.9K tons), Austria (2.7K tons), Ireland (1.8K tons), Spain (1.7K tons), Poland (1.5K tons) and Denmark (1K tons) – together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +14.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest fluoropolymers importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($388M), Italy ($246M) and Belgium ($205M), together accounting for 64% of total imports. France, Austria, the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain, Poland and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +16.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2024, the import price in the European Union amounted to $20,297 per ton, declining by -13.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, fluoropolymers import price increased by +41.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $23,387 per ton in 2023, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($30,571 per ton), while Italy ($12,271 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

ExportsEuropean Union’s Exports of Fluoropolymers

For the third year in a row, the European Union recorded decline in overseas shipments of fluoropolymers, which decreased by -30.2% to 48K tons in 2024. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 60%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 86K tons. From 2022 to 2024, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fluoropolymers exports declined significantly to $1.5B in 2024. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 61%. The level of export peaked at $2.3B in 2023, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Exports By Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of fluoropolymers, namely France, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Belgium (4.5K tons), making up a 9.4% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +37.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest fluoropolymers supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($429M), France ($374M) and Germany ($282M), together accounting for 73% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, France, with a CAGR of +40.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2024, the export price in the European Union amounted to $30,994 per ton, shrinking by -6.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 an increase of 34%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $33,008 per ton, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($36,722 per ton), while Belgium ($24,467 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
