“The cost of wind has not gone up” – Paul Murphy TD

  1. At the very least we need a temporary measure that means all proposed cost increases have to be approved by the regulator before being allowed.

A condition of approval being that the cost increase can’t lead to increased profits.

A second condition being that any increase is only allowed for three months at a go and then needs new justification.

  2. I absolutely hate that cunt and have never agreed with him on anything………until now.

I don’t know how to feel, where’s my whiskey

  3. Price control renewables? Why? If there’s more profit to be made in wind power than fossil fuels we’ll see much more wind power at which point they can compete against each other.

Price controls limit supply and don’t work

  4. It’s obviously not 100% green electricity, it’s from m the grid. How they get away with advertising 100% green electricity is the real question I presume.

  5. The government needs to grow a pair of balls and step in to stop this profiteering. As far as they are concerned they have done their job and we are getting €200 euro to solve our problems.

The only justifiable increase they should be allowed can only be in line with inflation and even with that said the ESB group made operation profits of €679 million during 2021 of which the state gets a dividend of €126 million.

We the customer keep getting squeezed and squeezed for what? Increasing corporate profits.

Its time for change. Is feidir linn

  6. The planning system needs an overhaul with regards to wind and solar developments. Projects get abandoned or stuck for years because property owners make crazy submissions claiming solar panels will burn birds out of the sky and turbines will give them cancer. These sites all respect the distance they must be from homes and also conform to habitat impact surveys and assessments, which is a huge investment. Not only that but large sums are put towards local nature preservation, parks or community developments by the renewable companies, usually in agreement with the local community.

Most renewable sites don’t see the light of day because of nimby’ism and a lack of education from the older demographic who are worried the land they inherited will lose value.

I recently read that a **SOLAR** site in the midlands was being opposed as the people living there claim that it will damage the boglands. Ironically this is coming from people illegally extracting and burning turf while the renewable companies have funds (hundreds of thousands) allocated towards rewetting bogs and turning them into preserved habitats for native Irish species.

Maybe if we had more green sources of energy, there would be more room for negotiation between companies operating in the grid and those running the wind/solar farms.

  7. He’s right. And he’s wrong.

Airtricity only get some of their electricity from wind.
The rest comes from the dirty old grid.

  8. Ireland baby! Rent? HA! Wanna buy a house? HA! Wanna have warm food!? HA!

Love it. Can’t wait for the next ressession in another year or two with all this inflation. HA! Not even sure how to get out of the hole. Love. It.

  9. They are on the grid and even if they weren’t you’d still expect price to change. That’s how supply and demand works. It doesn’t matter if they were 100% independent. In a capitalist market prices do that. Paul is a gobshite.

  10. The 100% green thing is bollocks though (same with Energia). If it was true their customers would have no power every time we have a still day. Every company is supplying a mix.

  11. Not exactly how it works. Increase in cost in one power source will drive demand to cheaper areas and eventually putting strain on wind causing increase in costs.

  12. Someone who’s full time job it is to understand these issues shouldn’t be making such stupid comments. They should know how the electricity market works.

All electricity is priced at the same rate no matter how it is produced. This is intended to help renewable producers. The price of electricity generated using gas is currently determining the price of all power.

    > The wholesale market in the EU follows a system of marginal pricing, also known as pay-as-clear market, meaning that everybody gets the same price for the electricity they are producing at that moment. Electricity producers (from national utilities to individuals who generate their own renewable energy and sell into the grid) bid into the market: they establish their price according to their production cost. Renewable energy sources are produced at zero cost, and are therefore by definition always cheapest. The bidding goes from the cheapest to most expensive. The cheapest electricity is bought first, next offers in line follow. Once the full demand is satisfied, everybody obtains the price of the last producer from which electricity was bought.

  13. How is it war profiteering. There was no war last year. Where they beat their expectations. It seems to me like its more likely something to do with covid or the company just being well run.

As for the price increase there is only one electricity grid in ireland.

  14. It’s always nice to know that this subreddit has so many staunch SSE supporters somehow.

Swear you were getting a free weeks electricity for every supportive comment written the way some of ye are talking.

  15. I didn’t expect this sort of price hike, maybe 10% but not this. I’m terrified for the future. My husband has stage 4 cancer, he’s got more operations to come so he is now on disability… we make €4,000 more each year with him on disability. With the cost of fuel to get to his work it is even higher. This is insane.

  16. This is way we need a law that says that energy company’s can only put their prices up if they can’t justify it. Renewable energy is one that is very hard to justify.

  17. This price gouging is also happening in the US. Not with wind energy, but the US oil industry is making dubious excuses for gas prices, while their stockholders are raking in $$$. It’s ludicrous.

  18. As someone told me on this sub months ago, sure they don’t make that much profit…. Only 3%>>> €30m… The fucking eejit

Edit: if you are of the belief that this is not profiteering you’ve been taken just like MAGA gobshites… Take a look at yourself.

  19. I’ve recently went for Energia over another cheaper alternative because they produce of their 100% green energy, if it’s all the same was I just being stupid? Should I always just go for the cheapest rate at the time of switching?

  20. Looks like it will cost me €100 to end the contract early but if bonkers.ie is accurate I’ll save nearly a grand.

I’m very annoyed by the huge price hike but more so I’m annoyed that I’ve been misled by their claim that they are 100% renewable which appears to be completely untrue. I don’t mind paying an acceptable premium for a greener option, but it appears they have been lying to the point of exploiting conscientious customers. I will gladly take my business elsewhere.

  21. According to Energia after I questioned them on the price hikes. I was told they still acquire 40% of their electricity from fossil fuels. Makes you wonder why they are more or less matching others and following suit with what can only be described as price gouging and profiteering from the current war in Ukraine.

Surely their prices should be 60ish% lower then those that have no renewable sources??

  22. He is making a valid point, if you buy from a supplier that claims they are selling you 100% renewable energy, then a reasonable expectation would be that prices would be better insulated against oil and gas prices. But their claim about selling 100% green energy is obviously a load of hokum.

  23. Well he argued water should be free when we all know it costs big money to deliver and maintain it.

So wind is free so I’d expect he would argue it should be free too as similar to water the cost of bringing it to your home as energy is ignored.

If water is free then electricity generated from ‘free’ wind should be free based on Paul Murphy’s logic.

  24. Wind power is intermittent, meaning its price necessarily follows the price of gas-generated power.

  25. Energy is pooled in the grid, and when demand outstrips the availability of renewables, the grid tops up the supply with gas👍

I’m summary Paul Murphy is a misleading w@nker profiteering from the people he pretends to represent.
