Hadn’t been to Holland Park in ages and was surprised by the crowd in Kyoto Garden today. Just wow.

  1. I come on Monday mornings when it is blissfully empty and quiet 🙃

  2. Lived in London for a year, number one thing I just can’t get used to is how little you can do spontaneously, at least on a weekend.

I remember walking around Lambeth one Sunday at like 3pm looking for somewhere half decent to get a late lunch, literally 4-5 places in a row were fully booked out. I wanted to go bowling last weekend, one place literally required bookings 2 day minimum in advance. Wanted to go to a fucking ramen bar after work on a Friday randomly once, sorry fully booked until 9.

More relevant to the post here, Kew Gardens was absolutely rammed with families last time I went. I mean was still pleasant but just so many people everywhere.

I know it’s a big city but it’s like there aren’t enough amenities per capita. If everything is just so saturated with clientele then I guess that’s how restaurants etc can pull bullshit like “discretionary” service charges.

  3. Head to Kew Gardens, far better cherry blossoms and Japanese gardens.

  4. Glad I went in early 2023 when tourism was only just starting up and there were no queues

  5. Not as bad as when it was the charmander spawn location in Pokémon Go when it came out

  6. You could probably go to some quiet spot thats almost as magical but nicer because youre the only people there. I love walking in the Lake District but you have to take the alternate routes in summer if you dont want to push through crowds of people.

  7. I was there this morning around 10 am with almost no one around

  8. Wow, this was always empty when I went. Used to live nearby, and it truly is a beautiful place to go.

  9. Oh god, the kyoto queues are so long they’ve spilled over to the uk

  10. I guess queuing is better than a small garden being overrun with sweaty bodies, but on principle I refuse to queue for a garden lol.. they’re like the one place in the world I would specifically *not* expect to queue for entry

  11. Zen relaxing beautiful garden nourishing the soul = +1

Standing for hours amongst stressed Londoners and tourists = -5

    Balance-4

    Not today thank you
