  33. Imagine having to live through three years of this pointless and bloody war. You’ve got used to the sirens, the fear, the looming threat of bombs and missiles, the not knowing when things will return to normal.

    Imagine that in spite of that, you keep pushing and trying to lead as normal a life as you can, going to work, getting home and cooking dinner with the now limited selection of goods in the grocery store.

    Imagine being forced to do all of this for three, long years. At some point it all became normal, and the gripping fear is somehow tuned out – even if only for a little. This has become the new normal for you.

    And then. Thunder strike. A terrifying echo of death shatters and shakes the air around you.

    A ballistic missile aimed at you hits. It wasn’t meant for a military target. It was meant for you.

    It doesn’t hit you. Another lucky break. You give thanks to a divine power.

    But someone you love was hit. Someone you adored and lived through all this is hit.

    At first they don’t pick up their phone. You see the news that a ballistic missile has hit the town. Several people dead.

    A white hot flash of fear hits you. You call again. Nothing. And again… Still nothing.

    You make your way to the place where the news said the missile struck. Soldiers have cordoned off the place – fearing a second strike to kill even more innocents.

    So you wait. Calling their phone again and again, until your phone is almost out of battery. You feel the tears streaming down your face, but you are not crying. Not yet. The stress is overwhelming you, but there’s still hope. A small hope.

    A small hope that is snuffed out, when the soldiers wave you through, and you see the lifeless, mangled body of the one you love so much, unceremoniously ripped to shreds by the explosions.

    For three years you withstood. For three years and two months, you held this off. Even though the fear never left you completely, at least you had your loved one to face it with.

    And now they’re gone.

    And you have to keep going.

    People mock Zelenksy for asking for more money or for standing his ground against completely one sided negotiations also raise my blood pressure.
