She was still on the bike, someone’s not used to clipping in.
Wait, so the cyclist fell on their own? And yet the driver got fined?
As a motorcyclist/cyclist myself, that is bs. Expecting the car to stop is a bit much. The brothers defence of “what if she fell to the other side..” is also bs. Then it would be tragic. But hardly the car’s fault. That same rule can apply anywhere…does that mean all the vehicles should stop whenever they see a cyclist? Hell no. Its like not going outside incase a piano falls on your head…
No where in the rule book does it specify that the car should stop or what an adequate space should be when driving around a cyclist.
I’m really not sure what the driver did wrong here or why the cyclist fell over.
Gave up trying to watch the video during to all the fucking ads.
The driver did pass without due care.
He passed way to fast for how close he was to the cyclists.
He should have either slowed way down to pass or stopped and let them pass. Considering there was nowhere near the minimum of 1.5 meter distance between the cyclists and the car while passing.
Edit here. Just to clarify i dont think he caused the cyclist to fall.
But i do think he was driving without due care, wich is what he got fined for
I am a cyclist and ride a lot here in northern Italy where the roads are narrow. Here are a few things…
1. The driver is going too fast during that pass. He should have slowed down.
2. The cyclist seems to have gotten stuck in her pedal and couldn’t release quick enough to get her foot down. My guess is that she is a new rider or inexperienced.
3. The shoulder seems to be a little chewed up and she was too close to the edge which probably also contributed to her falling.
Italian roads here are like this as well and you simply can’t ride the edge like that for most of it. That being said, the driver did blast by them but I think her falling was really her issue. Did he deserve a fine that large? No… Should he be told to slow the hell down? Yes…
I hate situations like this because it makes everyone look bad. He is a jerk for flying by them and they are jerks for making an issue out of a fall that was not his fault.
Guess it depends on how fast they were going.
It’s hard to tell from the footage, but a frame by frame analysis of the video would tell you & if they were going too fast to stop in case of an incident then that’s too fast, given the narrowness of the road & the lack of space to pass the cyclists at anything except a slowish crawl.
It doesn’t matter whether the cyclist fell over or not – that just underlines the reality that if one of them had fallen into the path of the vehicle, the driver would not have been able to stop in time.
You can tell the cyclist filming thought the driver was driving badly because they turn round and give the universal hang gesture for “what was that then?!”. They didn’t even know the cyclist in front of them had fallen over until they looking forwards again.
Some rural drivers just bomb around these back lanes at ridiculous speeds because they don’t care for the safety of other road users unfortunately & this is just one example.
The drivers completely at fault and absolutely deserves the fine and points. He was driving far to fast and showed no sign of slowing down. Looks like a basic cunt to me.
Driving on such roads you have to almost crawl past and when overtaking make sure they know you are aware before.
There just isn’t room for a mistake or correction..
As others have said he was going too fast and was driving without due care for other road users.
From the clip the cycleists don’t seem to be helping themselves either by cycling too close to the side, you should always be bold on a bike, take up some space and make sure other road users know what you’re doing.
It can be both things. You wouldnt even go past another car that quickly so its right he was fined but its also hilarious that she did the Austin Powers ‘Oh no, Ive fallen’ bit into a ditch.
I’m a cyclist and a I’m a big boy so I understand if I’m going to ride on roads, cars are going to have to come near me.
If I don’t want to ride near cars, I will ride on places where there aren’t cars, such as the thousands of miles of beautiful off road trails we have in our country.
I’d be interested to know what speed the driver was actually doing. Interesting that the police haven’t mentioned that. The speed on the video is also deceptive due to being filmed close up the the vehicle and with little point of reference visible to judge the speed – it will look faster than it would if you were to observe from further back
a back of a (cigarette) packet calculation:
in 1 second of footage he passed a couple of cyclists… so let’s say he passed 8m in that second, that equates to 28.8km/h, or just shy of 18mph. Does that sound ‘dangerously’ fast to anyone? You can drive 20mph past a school at 3.15 with kids running around everywhere ffs.
If the distance he travelled was 10m, that would put him at just shy of 30mph – that I would agree is too fast.
Sounds like a he’s been punished because she needs stabilisers..
Her falling down into the ditch had zero to do with that car
If the bike in front hadn’t decided to stop, she wouldn’t hav had to stop, ad therefore wouldn’t have fallen over due to not unclipping.
Driver a dick for going too quickly BUT plenty of space and absolutely not the driver’s fault that the cyclist took a tumble.
Would Farmer Jones or Mr Off Road Mann pass in that way if horse riders were involved instead of bikes?
Was stuck behind a cyclist on a single track road today. I opened the windows and turned the music up and slowed to a crawl. Cyclist was safe and actually pulled over when she had space and waved me by was nice.
Far too many people in too much of a rush man if you can’t pass safely don’t pass. Pretty simple.
I don’t like horses but I’d do the same for them well probably not the music not sure horses are fans of death metal.
Whether it touches her or not is not really relevant according to the Highway Code. It’s the fact it passed close at speed on a narrow road in breach of the Highway Code. The law states a safe passing distance. Historically it’s been >1m anyway. So the fact she fell over is immaterial. But was probably caused by the cyclist in front coming to a quick stop in shock at the speed the vehicle was going.
Of course if you read the Daily Mail 90%+ of comments and votes are in favour of the car! Crying – but it didn’t touch her!
I’ve had cars drive past me as if their driving the grand prix without any issues and until i see footage of the actual “fall” i’m calling it fake and if anything she probably lost her balance from going so slow and they should also stop been so fucking close to each other that’s just asking for trouble too from the lead breaking suddenly and those behind piling into them or from tires rubbing the lead which could also cause the rider to lose balance.
No matter how fast the driver was going if the vehicle don’t hit you or swerve in the cyclists direction than falling of the bike ain’t gonna happen and if you can’t put your foot on the ground when you’re going slow or stop than you are riding a bike wrong.
2 things here.
the driver was a plonker for passing like that and deserved his fine
clip pedals should be banned outside of sporting events, and be grounds for a fine if used on open public roads.
The cyclist is either not very good at cycling, or has fallen on purpose
As a cyclist and a motorist this is bullshit
She panicked after hearing someone scream and after not paying attention
Looks like the cyclist who fell was wearing shoes that lock into the pedals. I’ve known people who have fallen due to this. They are distracted and seem to forget they have to twist their foot to release the lock, by the time they realise it’s too late and they’re already falling. That’s not to say the driver wasn’t being a huge dick and driving far too fast and without due care for other road users, but the other two cyclists didn’t fall and so he can’t be accused of “making them fall”, just contributing to the incident. Still deserves the fine, though.
she fell because she couldnt reach the floor/tried to put her foot on the grass, nothing to do woth the car.
im a cyclist, he could have slowed a bit, but personally i only car if they close pass from behind, from the front i know exactly whats happening.
The real crime was not doing an age check on the sale of that lycra.
