American LNG imports topped Russian gas flows to the European Union in the first quarter of 2025, reversing a one-year trend of growing volumes from the Kremlin.

When Russia began throttling gas flows to much of the rest of Europe in 2022, the United States vowed to ship additional LNG across the Atlantic to prevent a gas shortage – which made the US the EU’s second-biggest gas supplier after Norway.

But amid surging EU imports from Russia via both pipeline and LNG tanker in early 2024, Europe had to contend with the fact that Russia had once again become the bloc’s No. 2 gas supplier.

After Ukraine let a gas agreement with the Kremlin lapse at the start of the year has reversed the trend once more, new data gathered by think tank Bruegel showed today: US LNG laid a firm claim to the No 2 spot, providing 18 bcm in flows compared to Gazprom’s 10 bcm.

Undisputed champion: Norway with 23.5 bcm.
