Going through some old photos in my parents' stuff and thought these might be of interest to someone. This would have been at some point in 1999 (obviously, lol).

I grew up in London in the 80s/90s and we have boxes and boxes of photos from back then, so if anyone's interested I can post more interesting ones about London architecture/general vibe etc as I find them.

  1. This was the year I moved to London, and I ended up working for the construction management firm that actually raised the wheel.

  2. I remember this, I am pretty sure it took several days to go up really slowly

Not to mislead I thought that the Millennium wheel was falling down…

  4. Please post more of these photos, any and all areas of London would make for interesting viewing.

  5. The thing that always gets me about photos from this time, a period I still think of as being recent and “about 10 years ago” is just how low and flat the London skyline was in general. Obviously there were exceptions but the absolutely rapid growth in high rises in vast swathes in and around central London really has been dramatic.

  6. It was a temporary structure that was supposed to come down in 2005. 20 years later it’s still there. It’s kind of iconic in a way. The tourists love it.
