Greece came close to winning the Men’s Water Polo World Cup, but lost in Sunday’s final to Spain to end up second in the tournament.
Podgorica in Montenegro hosted this World Aquatics tournament and saw Greece advance to its final with its 18-14 triumph over Hungary in the semis.
The Greeks even got a two-goal lead early in the first half against Spain, but the Spanish were more prolific in attack.
Greece’s last gasp effort reduced its deficit from three goals (12-9) to one (12-11), but the Spanish imposed themselves afterwards, leafing by four (16-12) and finishing the game off.
This was Greece’s first appearance in a World Cup final after 28 years.
