This is a great idea & something the UK also needs to adopt.
This is fine, but the lack of prescience on EVs is chilling.
I liken it to energy security/independence. Only now that it’s too late does Europe see it’s folly in partnering with Russia instead of developing homegrown energy solutions for the 2020s.
EVs cannot be disposable, nor proprietary. As batteries lose their capability, EVs should be able to be easily serviced by anyone with certified batteries of their choosing. This law has to happen NOW because the design cycle for EVs is years long and manufacturers need to be forced to account for this.
You cannot have proprietary battery systems, dealer-only service, or disposable EVs. And EV can operate as long as it doesn’t rust out provided you handle the batteries properly by keeping the vehicle going with a fresh pack as needed.
I honestly vibe so hard with like 9 out of every 10 of the EU’s proposals. I only hope its influence globally can grow and grow!
It is my understanding that the rules says nothing on rights to repair. The new legislation is a step in the right direction, but not as progressive as I would have wished for.
