  1. that’s different. when you’re abroad you just have to speak english loudly and slower

  2. Daily mail is literally just boomer and retardUK bait

  3. What’s the difference between immigrants and expats?

  4. I know plenty of British people in Spain who speak great Spanish. I am learning every day. I am even learning Catalan alongside it. We are not all the same.

As with Americans, it’s the loudest most obnoxious tourists/expats you hear about, not the quiet ones just going about their business in a respectful way.

  5. Hmm yes the Daily Mail a very trustworthy source that has never once lied in it’s reporting of fearmongering stories… except every time they’ve been caught red handed doing exactly that

  6. Why doesn’t britain recruit immigrants from US cities? They already know a rudimentary english variant

  7. I did Spanish evening classes a few years ago. Amongst the students were a British couple who were learning Spanish since they “didn’t want to spend all the time hanging out with bloody English people” when they retired to Spain.

  8. I wonder how many Daily Mail reading “Escape to the Country” types living in e.g. Wales can say Llanystumdwy correctly? Probably fewer than immigrants who speak good English and probably a lot more vocal about why they shouldn’t even bother, never mind the fact that 50% of British people who live in Spain can’t speak any Spanish.

On the latter point, most British people I knew in Spain could speak Spanish pretty well, but in the more stereotypical costa set it’s rather a different story – see e.g. [British immigration in Spain – Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_immigration_in_Spain) for links. While the British aren’t the only people who are bad at languages in Europe contrary to popular belief, I don’t think the Mail in particular should be pointing fingers because I’m fairly sure its readership scores fairly higher on the why should I learn another language because the sun doesn’t set on the British Empire Two World Wars and one World Cup tally ho what what old bean stakes.

  9. Always makes me laugh when people try to compare financially and educationally destitute economic migrants with expats who’ve worked their whole lives and are moving out with a big old nest egg. You think of the numbers that had their houses built bespoke for them.

Maybe we should start that here. Migrants are only allowed into the UK if they have a giant nest egg and are able to have their house built for them and enough money to live off of for the rest of their lives.

Sounds brilliant. Obviously the left wouldn’t object to this because they’re exactly the same thing aren’t they, no difference at all between the two groups of people

  10. My MIL (may fire ever burn her soul) genuinely complained that parts of Spain they were looking to emigrate to didn’t have enough “native English Speakers”

  11. If I had my entire life’s worth of time and every resource at my finger tips, I still could not begin to explain the levels of pure hatred I have for the Daily Mail. Utter click bait bollocks that serves to divide us

  12. Of course they speak the language. The language is saying “No…speako…frog” very slowly and loudly, isn’t it?

  13. Someone ask Richard Tice if he and his family speak Arabic.

  14. Expats are ‘us’ whereas immigrants are ‘them’. I don’t agree with it at all but to most people that is what it is.

  15. You’re right, but I’ve gotta question why this sub is always so obsessed with going against the native population. I mean, is the number of Brits in Spain who can’t speak Spanish nearly as many as the amount of legal and illegal migrants from everywhere all over the world who can’t speak English despite living in Britain?

  16. I’m pretty sure this study includes people where English isn’t their first language, but they do speak it, just not confidently

  17. No joke, my in-laws lived in Spain for a while and just added an ‘o’ to the end of words while pointing and speaking loudly and slowly. I would not have believed it if I hadn’t seen it.

  18. What does this even mean? What’s the implication here?

  19. God, the amount of dog whistle racism going on in here

We all know expats are British which is why they’re called that, also it’s because the Daily Fail, the Scum and the Torygraph have labelled immigrant as a slur

Anyone who says expats give more to the country whereas immigrants take out has their wires crossed, most expats move to Spain to retire in the Costa Del Sol, tell me how retiring benefits the economy?

  20. Oh here come the liberal Nazis giving everyone a lesson in morality.

  21. That’s spains problem?

People living in a country and not speaking the language is a problem and it should be dealt with regardless of the country.
