  1. I mean no offense to him, but Paapa Essiedu as Snape is such a disappointment. I was hoping that rumor wouldn’t be true.

  2. This would have to get outstanding reviews for me to bother. Even then, not sure I want to remotely support JKR

  3. …Lithgow as Dumbledore? I’m just not seeing how this casting is going to work.

  4. I hear you’re a racist now, Potter.

Will be interesting to see how they address Harry Potter accusing Hogwarts’s only black professor nearly every year of some sort of criminal activity.

  5. Let’s be honest it’s dead in the water already just based on the casting.

  6. Oh, Paul Whitehouse as Filch? Now that is an interesting pick. I can see that working well!

  7. Nick Frost is perfect casting, but it’s still not enough to get me to watch

  8. Curious to see how this turns out. If it was being made by Amazon or Netflix I’d be fully expecting a huge dud but HBO don’t mess around and from what I’ve heard there are some quality people behind it.

I just find it hard to imagine how they’ll manage to keep it fresh and differentiate it enough from the films given those films have essentially defined the entire aesthetic of HP and got a lot right. It’s a bit like trying to imagine someone remaking LotR… I struggle to picture it.

Also how do you deal with the kids ageing? Do they re-cast midway through?

  9. Drawing board meeting:

    *Fellas… hear me out… it’s professor Snape… but he’s black*

  10. The choice of Paapa Essiedu for Snape is way too familiar to the stunt Disney pulled with Rachel Ziegler as Snow White. Not optimistic about this at all

  11. Sorry but a black Snape just isn’t working for me. I loved the Harry Potter movies but I’m not touching this due to the casting.

  12. I actually think the casting is pretty good so far.

Lithgow is an awesome actor. Put a beard on him and he’ll be a great Dumbledore – certainly better than Gambon who didn’t really get the character imo.

I don’t know the Snape guy at all so have no opinion on him although following Rickman is an impossible task, but Frost as Hagrid will be a laugh and Whitehouse as Filch is inspired casting.

  13. The irony of them really pushing the “faithful adaptation” angle while announcing race-swapped casting for one of the most clearly defined characters in the series is something. Makes you wonder how much else they’re just going to change for the sake of changing it.

  14. A black snape will be so distracting and too immersion breaking.

  15. The most important issue I have with this tv series is that the showrunner saying that he never read the books.

  16. The casting really stinks.

I was hopeful after John Lithgow, who’s got a surprising range to him, but the rest of the announcements so far really are awful.

Not going to bother with this, just like I didn’t bother with the Fantastic Beasts films. They completed the Potter films and ended on a good note, I’ll leave it there.

  17. I’m not into Harry Potter but my gut tells me this may be a huge financial failure. Star Wars acolyte level of suck.

  18. Some of the snape situations really could border on racist if you make him black, the whole misunderstood dark tone is just going to come off as Harry being a bigot lol

  19. If you had great expectations for longevity for the show, you would not have cast an almost 80 year old Lithgow, could have easily casts a 60something year old actor and then used Hollywood makeup magic to make him look older. In fact, everyone being cast should be 15 years younger than the age they will be portraying, obviously our trio of wizard teens can’t be 1 year olds, but we they are the exception.

  20. It’s kinda hilarious that they wanted to make a show to be more faithful to the books, with more detail than the films etc etc, just to completely and utterly miscast one of the biggest characters

  21. People who think Essiedu is “too handsome” to play Snape seem to conveniently forget that make-up exists.

  22. On one hand, I’d love to see an expansion of things that got lost in the translation from book to film. On the other, this somehow still feels too soon and unnecessary.

  23. Oh boy, another rehash of a story we’ve seen two separate times. I wonder how many tens of millions they’ll spend.
